Unique places
When we hear the word Galápagos, the first thing that comes to mind is a giant tortoise. Send it away as far as possible, because this stereotype doesn’t allow you to move forward, and behind this lumbering long-liver you can see an incredible underwater world with unique flora and fauna, capable of driving nature lovers into ecstasy. This earthly paradise was opened in 1535 — interestingly, by a priest, and by mistake. For a long time it was a place of exile for convicts, which, you’ll agree, causes confusion and misunderstanding about the punishment system in Ecuador, which owns these islands. The question is: where in Ecuador were they sent in order to encourage a deserving figure and a scientific luminary? Answer: right here, the famous naturalist Charles Darwin in 1835 studied the islands. Spending almost a month on the islands, he began to suspect something and for the first time thought about the change of species, later formulating all of this in his theory of evolution. Go on a Galápagos cruise too — whether you’re looking for scientific discoveries, pursuing unique adventures, or simply wanting to swim in clear waters. It’s exactly here that experienced divers go, knowing that the diving programs on the islands are limited, but of the highest quality. In any case, it’s difficult to see such animals that will meet you on the island in another place and in such quantities. No matter what I say at the beginning of my text, the tortoise — is the main attraction of the Tortoise Islands. The elephant, the largest species of tortoises – live for over 170 years. Reaching a weight of 400 kg, they were gastronomically very attractive to the first settlers, and because of their unhurriedness and taste. Proof of this is the decrease in the population over 200 years from 250 to 15 thousand.
Active conservation efforts have borne fruit, and now the population is slowly, but recovering. The second wonder of nature on the islands — is the marine iguana. It is believed that it was forced to climb into the sea due to the lack of enough food on land. Seaweed suited it perfectly, considering that the choice was not very large. If the iguana developed the ability to swim and dive, then another representative, apparently, found a lot of goodies on the ground, because the flightless cormorant got fat and ate so much that it lost the ability to take to the sky — in other words, the cormorant. Next comes the cuteness of the sea lion, which, by tradition, also breaks stereotypes and doesn’t really like water, preferring to spend 70% of its time on land. Galápagos penguins are the only species that live north of the equator. The smallest-looking in the world, yet proud. Proud, probably because it stays faithful to its chosen partner throughout its whole monogamous existence. When you see the wonderful frigatebird, you’ll understand what it means to have a name — it most likely gave it itself in the stone tablets, with a firm azure claw. It is unusual, bright, colorful, entertaining, and for females, most likely, also wonderful. But who are we to judge the beauty of feathered creatures? They have their own contests and dances. Unusual representatives of wildlife and unique places combined with comfortable weather are exactly what attract experienced seekers of calm and wonder to the islands.
