Why there is no direct route from Ukraine

Ukraine’s civil airports currently do not accept or depart commercial flights, so a direct route from Ukraine to any embarkation port is impossible. This is the main difference in preparing for a cruise for a Ukrainian traveler compared, for example, to a resident of Poland or Germany: the route is always made up of several parts, and this should be considered already at the stage of planning dates and budget.

Typical itinerary

The most common scheme is the overland part to a neighboring country-Poland, Romania, Moldova, or another state with an operating airport-and from there you fly, often with one connection, to the city where the embarkation port is located. The overland part can be traveled by bus, train, car, or you can use a transfer from the agency. All these cities have large airports with regular connections, so reaching them by flying from neighboring countries to Ukraine is usually not difficult.

How much time to allow for the journey

The liner departs exactly according to the schedule and does not wait for passengers who are late, so the main rule is simple: allow a buffer day. Plan to arrive in the embarkation city at least one day before the liner’s departure, and preferably earlier if the itinerary includes multiple connections. This gives you a reserve in case of a flight delay or other unforeseen situations on the way. If this is your first such itinerary, calculate with extra time for unfamiliar airport procedures as well-for example, passport control during peak hours.

Where to stay overnight before embarkation

Most travelers book a hotel in the port city for the night before departure: it reduces stress and allows you to calmly get to the terminal in the morning. Some choose a hotel right at the airport if the flight arrives late in the evening. Both options work well-just be sure to include them in your travel budget in advance.

The trip back after the cruise ends

Passengers are usually disembarked early in the morning on the last day of the cruise, and the return journey home has the same multi-stage structure as the trip there: first, a flight to a neighboring country of Ukraine, and only then the overland segment. Don’t book the return flight immediately for the morning of disembarkation: it’s better to leave a few hours’ buffer for passing through controls, collecting baggage, and getting to the airport, and for long-distance airports sometimes it makes sense to plan another hotel night before flying home.
