Catalina Island lies off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, 2 kilometers south of the city of La Romana. It is part of the La Romana province. In shape, it resembles a drop. The island is 4.6 km long and about 3 km wide. The island’s area is 9.18 sq. km. The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in May 1494.
Today, the island is uninhabited; however, on its western side there are beautiful white-sand beaches for tourists with the appropriate facilities. Cruise ships bring their passengers here for a beach vacation.
Catalina Island is beautiful, like a holiday postcard. Its beaches with silky sand, sparkling clear water in every shade from blue to turquoise, palm groves that provide blessed shade, and a rocky chain half a kilometer from the shore create the landscape of a true Bounty Island. Catalina is a natural national park. Nature itself has created the best conditions here for water sports.
The island is surrounded by colorful coral reefs. This is perhaps the best place in the Caribbean for snorkeling. On the slope that runs from the beach itself, over many years a whole coral kingdom has grown, home to an enormous number of fascinating marine creatures, and this lively, vibrant world can be perfectly seen in clear water. Visibility in these waters is about 30 meters, although most of the marine attractions are located at depths of no more than 20 meters. The most interesting spots are “Aquarium” (Aquarium) and “Wall” (Wall), where the bottom drops off, while around it swim wide-eyed porcupinefish, sea fans grow, and colonies of yellow and purple tubular sponges thrive.
On the island itself there is a Marine Museum, where you can see the remains of Captain Kidd’s ship and, at the same time, watch a show recreating the wreck of the Spanish galleon “Guadeloupe” (Nuestra Senora Guadalupe), which sank off the coasts of the Dominican Republic in 1724.
ClimateThe climate in the Dominican Republic is a maritime tropical one. Throughout the year, the relative humidity here is high-70–80%. The hottest are the summer months and September; across the country, temperatures during this time reach +32…+34 degrees, and at night they do not drop below +22 degrees. In the remaining months, it is about +30 degrees during the day, and +18…+20 at night.
The highest rainfall occurs in May and November. The average annual rainfall is 1000–1500 mm.
In late summer, typhoons are common in the Dominican Republic, and local media report on their approach. The water temperature throughout the year does not fall below +26 degrees. The main seasons in the Dominican Republic are from December to April and from June to September.
