Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
Description — Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
Virgin Gorda is an island of volcanic origin, one of the Virgin Islands, the third largest by area and the second most populous in the British Overseas Territory of the British Virgin Islands. Population - 3063 people (2003), living within an area of 21 km². Almost everyone lives in Spanish Town, the island’s capital. Virgin Gorda is an island of volcanic origin; its highest point is 450 m above sea level (Gorda Peak). The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Later, pirate bases were established on the island.
Its north-eastern part is the summit of an underwater volcano, whose elevated slopes spread out in all directions, forming numerous peninsulas and headlands, especially those projecting into the sea in the north-east and south-west. The southern part of the island is a plain and is almost entirely taken up by the buildings of the island’s capital, Spanish Town.
Spanish Town is the island’s main settlement, so small that even remotely it does not resemble a city. It is a rather chaotic complex of low houses and narrow streets, centered around the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour, where most shops, restaurants, banks, and entertainment centers are located.
the British Virgin Islands are an archipelago in the Caribbean Sea as part of the Lesser Antilles - many islands and islets, only a small portion of which are inhabited. The largest are Tortola (54 sq. km), Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke. The islands are predominantly flat.
The British Virgin Islands’ main advantage is nature of incomparable beauty and simply fairy-tale beaches. The island of Virgin Gorda is the most visited among all the islands of the archipelago.
ClimateThe climate is tropical marine, trade-wind, warm and very even. The average monthly temperature throughout the year varies only slightly - from +22-24 C in winter to +28-29 C in summer. Daily temperature fluctuations are also not pronounced.
Precipitation is up to 1300 mm per year; two dry (winter and summer) and two rainy (spring and autumn) seasons are distinguished here. The maximum rainfall occurs between September and November-December, although even at this time, rainy days are no more than five or six per month. Between July and October, the likelihood of tropical hurricanes passing over the islands is high, though they are recorded significantly less often here than over the nearby Leeward Islands. The most favorable time to travel to the islands is from mid-December through the end of April.

What to see
