Description — Tampa, Florida, USA

Tampa is the third-largest city in the U.S. state of Florida, the county seat of Hillsborough County, located on the west side of the peninsula. The city lies on the shore of a large natural bay called Tampa Bay, which extends about 55 km inland into the Florida peninsula. The Hillsborough River runs through the city. The population in 2010 was 335,709. It is considered one of the fastest-growing cities in Florida.

The Tampa Bay Area metropolitan area includes three major cities: Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg, as well as several dozen smaller towns with populations ranging from 10 to 100 thousand residents. In total, about 4 million people live in the Tampa-Clearwater-St. Petersburg metro area.

For a long time, Tampa was a small fishing village until, in 1885, Vicente Martinez Ybor-an American industrialist of Spanish origin-relocated cigar manufacturing to Tampa. Hundreds of houses sprang up immediately around the factories, housing workers who arrived mostly from Cuba and Latin America. Adjacent industries, commerce, and the service sector began to develop rapidly. Tampa not only became the “Cigar Capital of the World,” but by 1900, overnight, it turned into one of the largest cities in Florida.

Today, Tampa is a city that offers its guests a wide variety of entertainment and wonderful beaches.

Climate

The climate in Tampa is subtropical. Summers are hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. From June to September, 2/3 of all annual precipitation falls. The average temperature in July is +32.1 °C. The close proximity to a large body of water plays an important role, limiting the rise in temperature.

Winter in Tampa is dry and very mild. Frosts in winter occur far from every year. The average January temperature is +16 °C.

Tampa and the surrounding areas experience the passage of tropical air systems almost every year; however, direct hurricane hits are extremely rare. The last hurricane to pass over the city was recorded in 1921.

Sights

Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Sunshine Skyway Bridge

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is truly an outstanding architectural structure. It connects Tampa with the city of St. Petersburg and boasts an irresistible appearance. The bridge is almost 9 km long-making it the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere. At the point where ocean liners pass beneath it, the bridge sharply arches its back, rising over the water to a height of 19-story buildings. Cars racing along its roadway have to climb up, like a hill, and after crossing the “ridge,” rush back down. When there’s water all around-that’s pretty scary. Some retirees stop at the foot of the bridge and ask special attendants to help get them to the other side.

What to see

Ibor-City Museum and Park Complex

Ibor-City Museum and Park Complex

Today, the historic heritage of the city’s boom period can be felt in the oldest district of the city-Ybor City-located to the northeast of downtown Tampa. Ybor City developed as a Latin American neighborhood where cigar manufacturing was concentrated. Reaching its peak at the beginning of the Great Depression (in 1929, 500 million cigars were rolled in the factories of Ybor City), the area then experienced decades of neglect and decline, and has been partially restored only over the last decade. Here you’ll find the Cigar Museum, a small but interesting Ybor City District Museum; a shopping and entertainment complex with a 20-screen cinema, restaurants, clubs, and little shops; and, in addition, there are operating historic trams.

Busch Gardens Tampa Theme Park

Busch Gardens Tampa Theme Park

Busch Gardens Tampa - a themed park with an area of 136 hectares, designed in the style of 19th-century Africa. The park’s history dates back to March 31, 1959, when it opened with just a few entertainment venues. Today, it is a vast complex where a variety of attractions are housed, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and exotic animals. In all, visitors to the park can see dozens of species of African wildlife, including lions, hyenas, hippos, giraffes, elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, as well as many species of birds and reptiles. There are about 25 attractions in total, catering to guests of different ages-so whether you’re traveling with kids or coming as an adult, you won’t get bored in the park.

Science and Industry Museum

Science and Industry Museum

The city’s best-known attraction is the Science and Industry Museum (MOSI - Museus Of Science and Industry). It is the largest scientific institution in the country’s south-eastern region. The museum features more than four and a half hundred interactive exhibits, and getting to know them will allow guests to learn a great deal of interesting facts about the world around them. Flight-simulation features for an attack fighter, the most complex heart operations, the power of natural forces, and the diversity of life on our planet-these are just a few of the interesting topics covered by the museum’s exhibits. On the museum grounds, there is a modern cinema where science-focused films are regularly screened, as well as a planetarium.

Adventure Island Waterpark

Adventure Island Waterpark

Far beyond the city, the Adventure Island water park is well known-this is a real island of adventures with plenty of different attractions and relaxation areas. The water park opened in 1980. On an area of 12 sq km, there are all kinds of water slides and attractions, and for thrill-seekers and adrenaline lovers, there are several high-speed slides-25 meters of almost free-fall under the name “Water Typhoon,” or a 6-storey, wildly spiraled descent called “Water Moccasin.” For children, there is a true paradise of fun and unlimited mischief called “Spray Attack.” This complex has an simply countless number of various carousels, swings, water slides, and other no less exciting attractions.

Lowry Park Zoo

Lowry Park Zoo

Lowry Park Zoo is included in the top three zoos across the country among mid-sized zoos. There are about two thousand animals representing 375 different species, including animals found only in Florida, such as Florida panthers and Red Book-listed primates. The zoo also has bird enclosures where birds fly freely around visitors, as well as enclosures where you can pet and feed the animals. Another hit with children is the reptiles and terrariums exhibit. The park also remembers scientific research, serving as a research center and a treatment facility for manatees, which are becoming extinct.

Aquarium

Aquarium

The Florida Aquarium is one of Tampa’s most fascinating attractions. Here, visitors can see what is visible to divers who dive deep into the sea. The aquarium consists of four parts. In the Gallery of Origins, you can find turtles, alligators, and river otters. There is also a mangrove colony with an enormous variety of fish species. In the Coral Reef Gallery, you can see a huge aquarium where 1600 species of fish and animals that inhabit the reefs live. In the next gallery, you can watch jellyfish and fun sea turtles. Sharks, whales, and other large aquatic creatures are also featured here. A real delight is observing dolphins and large sharks in their natural habitat.
