Syros Island, Greece

Description — Syros Island, Greece

If you take all of the Cyclades and break it down into parts, its heart is the island of Syros. Like most of the islands of Greece, it is relatively small-just 20 km long and 8 km wide-but it offers a variety of landscapes, from mountains to plains, whose residents are engaged in agricultural crops. For some unclear reason, the island has not a single monument of ancient Greek art, yet at the same time it is perfect for a purely beach-based holiday and for fishing. It has many small coves, headlands, and two large bays-Ermoupoli and Finikas.

A French writer of the mid-19th century, Théophile Gautier, spoke about the island like this:

"Syros... is approximately the navel of Greece, the capital of elegance and nobility. Who could truly have imagined that these qualities grow so abundantly on a poor, rocky island in the Aegean Sea!"
