Seyðisfjörður, Iceland
Description — Seyðisfjörður, Iceland
Seyðisfjörður is a port city and municipality in Iceland. It is the administrative center of the Seyðisfjörðarkaupstaður municipality in the region of Austurland. It is located on the eastern coast of the country, at the end of the Seyðisfjörður fjord.
Seyðisfjörður is surrounded by mountains. The most famous of them is Mount Bjólfur, located to the west of the town. The fjord itself is accessible from any side thanks to the main road that runs through the entire town. Here you can find colonies of charming puffins, as well as the ruins of ancient settlements such as Vestdalsheiði, where the local church was once relocated from. Many consider Seyðisfjörður one of the most picturesque towns in Iceland, not only because of its impressive nature, but also because nowhere else in Iceland are there as well-preserved historic wooden buildings. Most of them were built in the early 19th century. They give the town a remarkable atmosphere.
Through the town flows the Fjarðará River, which is simply teeming with many picturesque waterfalls. One of the most fascinating excursions in Seyðisfjörður starts right in the center of town from the eastern bank of the river. By going up the river, tourists can admire the beauty of more than 25 waterfalls. Nature lovers will find excellent walking trails and breathtaking scenery here.
Seyðisfjörður is one of the country’s popular tourist centers. In recent times, the town has been paying increasing attention to the development of the tourism industry. The town offers everything for the convenience of road-trip travelers, as well as for artists who are drawn to the local landscapes. There are several museums, an arts center, a cinema, a swimming pool, a library, a hotel, a wine shop, and more.
ClimateThe climate here is harsher than the national average. The reason is the highland area surrounding the fjords. Summers are colder, winters are severe, with more abrupt temperature changes. The warmest month here is July. Temperatures very rarely rise above +10 °C, which is already noticeable compared to the milder climate on Iceland’s northwest coast, where the vast majority of settlements are located. In January, -6 °C is considered the norm, although frosts down to -15 °C can also occur. The average annual precipitation on the eastern coast does not differ from the figures in other cities. 70–80 mm per month is considered normal. Three summer months are the time when precipitation falls at about half as much.
