Sanya is a tropical seaside resort in China, located in the far south of Hainan Island, and is an international tourism hub. The city stretches along the Sanyawan Bay. The island lies in southern China, at the same latitude as Hawaii, which is why it is often called the “Eastern Hawaii.” The island’s area is 33,920 km². The island is washed by the waters of the South China Sea. Hainan is the second-largest island (after Taiwan) and the only island in China with a tropical climate. Here, the air is very clean and beneficial. By the way, Nanshan Park, located on the island, is the only place in the world that meets international environmental standards-ISO 14000.
In ancient times, the city was called Yazhou; its history dates back to the Qin dynasty period (221-206 BC). Since the city was far from China’s political and cultural centers, for many centuries it was known as Tianya Haijiao (“at the edge of the sky and the sea”).
Sanya is famous for its cleanest air and intoxicating sunshine-the combination that tour guides call a “natural oxygen cocktail.” The Sanya tourist area is surrounded by pristine tropical rainforests, which occupy an area of about 62,000 hectares. In total, the island has 9 nature reserves at the national, provincial, and municipal levels with a combined area of 13,000 hectares. Sanya is a garden city, where the best environmental conditions in the country can be found.

The golden season in Hainan runs from November to May. The region is traditionally considered a “typhoon corridor,” so the island is a paradise for windsurfing enthusiasts.
