Roseau, Dominica

Description — Roseau, Dominica

Roseau is the capital of Dominica, population - 14 847 people (2001). This small, compact urban settlement is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the Roseau River, and the forest-covered Morne Bruce mountain. The city was built on the site of the ancient indigenous settlement of Sairi; it is the oldest and most significant city on the island. Located on the western (leeward) coast of Dominica, it combines modern and colonial (French) architecture. The city features many interesting architectural monuments.

The central part of Roseau is densely built up with small houses, between which there are green plantings or open spaces. The city has botanical gardens and the gardens of the Parliament building. The Roseau River is one of the largest rivers flowing through the capitals of the Antilles.

Dominica is a state on the island of the same name in the Lesser Antilles (Windward) islands in the Caribbean Sea. Dominica is an island of volcanic origin. It is mountainous, with several volcanoes. Today, there are no active volcanoes on Dominica, but volcanic activity is manifested in the form of geysers, hot springs, and small lakes with boiling water. Along the coast, there are beaches with black and yellow sand.

Dominica is sometimes called the “Island of Nature of the Caribbean Sea,” which presumably reflects its pristine natural beauty. It is the youngest island among the Lesser Antilles, formed by volcanic activity, an echo of which can be considered the existence of the world’s second-largest lake with boiling water. The island has lush mountain rainforest trails, home to many animals, including endemic species.

Climate

The climate of this area is tropical and humid; the heat is moderated by north-easterly winds. The most favorable weather is from November to March. In the summer, tropical hurricanes are common, causing significant economic damage to the city. Temperatures throughout the year range from +25 to +28° C. The average annual rainfall is 1500-2000 mm. Spring is the most suitable season for visiting the city and the entire island.

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Beautiful Harbor

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Beautiful Harbor

There are many interesting architectural monuments in the city, one of which is a Catholic cathedral of the 18th century. The church was built in the Gothic style and makes a strong impression. The building looks like an old tall brick tower with a pointed roof and arched windows. On the facade, in recesses in the shape of arches, three spotless white statues of saints are installed.

Old Market

Old Market

Old Market, also known as the Slave Market, is located near the National Museum, by the seaside. During colonial times, it was a fairly thriving market. On this city square, you could buy just about anything. Clothing, furniture, and food were sold here. Public executions were also carried out on these premises. In 1988, Old Market was renovated; a large number of shops and kiosks opened here, selling handmade jewelry, souvenirs, clothing, shoes, fruits, spices, and much more.

What to see

Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden in Roseau once was considered the best garden in the region, but in 1979 it was severely damaged by a hurricane, after which it was restored. This event is still remembered by a large baobab that fell on a bus. Here you can find the most interesting representatives of tropical flora, including several endemic species. Within their lush vegetation, you can see many different species of birds, butterflies, and reptiles. Today, the Botanical Garden is one of the most attractive places for a relaxing getaway for both many locals on the island and travelers. And on holidays, various entertainment events are often held here. There is also a parrot sanctuary, where you can see two of the rarest parrot species-Sisserou (Imperial Amazon) and Jaco.

Trafalgar Falls

Trafalgar Falls

Trafalgar Falls is one of the most popular attractions on the island of Dominica. Majestic waterfalls cascade down over enormous volcanic boulders that conceal a picturesque gorge covered in dense tropical vegetation. Two waterfalls are located close to each other. The right Trafalgar is named “Mother”; it reaches approximately 75 feet in height, while the left one is nicknamed “Father,” with a height of 125 feet. They originate from tributaries of the Roseau River. A special bus runs from the city of Roseau to the village of Trafalgar. The journey is quick and easy, but the climb up to the waterfalls is quite dangerous. It is recommended to go up with a guide. The stones can be slippery, and after rainfall the water flows are swift.

Morne Trois Pitons National Park

Morne Trois Pitons National Park

The National Dominican Park of Morne Trois Pitons covers an area of 7,000 hectares. The mountain peak of Morne Trois Pitons itself reaches a height of 1,389 m above sea level. The slopes and the base of the Morne Trois Pitons mountain are densely overgrown with tropical forest expanses, which, in turn, have become home to a wide variety of Dominican wildlife. The highlight of the entire park can be considered the “boiling lake” Boiling-Lake, located at the northern borders of the park. The park also features another very popular body of water- the “emerald lake” Emerald-Pool, with an abundance of mineral salt. There are many crater lakes in the park, a considerable number of delightful waterfalls, deep gorges, many fumaroles, and hot springs. In 1997, the National Park was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Beaches of Dominica

Beaches of Dominica

The best coastlines for beach holidays and water sports are located in the Portsmouth area in the northwest of the island. The eastern part has significantly rougher waters with high surf, but there are a few excellent sandy stretches south of Calibish where the waters are calm enough. The shores of the island of Dominica are lined with volcanic rock and tuff, so the beaches feature an original black and gray sand color. Dominica also has beaches made of shell sand, which doesn’t heat up in the sun like sand does. Turtle Bay Beach (females lay their eggs here calmly) will appeal to surfing lovers. Woodford Hill Beach is known for its calm sea, ideal for relaxing with the family. “Champagne” Beach-here gas bubbles jump up from the water, giving the impression that instead of water there is champagne.

Boiling Lake

Boiling Lake

Boiling Lake is one of nature’s wonders and the world’s second-largest geothermal lake. It is located within Morne Trois Piton National Park, in the village of Delices. The lake is equally beautiful and dangerous. Its water temperature is 92 degrees, and the boiling occurs continuously. The water surface is surrounded by mountain ranges and shrouded in mist. This “mist” is, in fact, vapors. At Boiling Lake, not only is swimming prohibited, but even getting close to it is forbidden. At any moment, a column of searing lava or scorching air may burst up from it. That’s why tourists watch this natural landmark from safe, high cliffs.
