Puerto Princesa - a city in the Philippines, on the island of Palawan, the administrative center of the Palawan province. According to 2000 data, it has 161 912 residents. The city is named after Princess Eulalia de Bourbon, daughter of Isabella II of Spain, who during the 1872 expedition founded the city on the island of Paraguas (also known as Palawan). Puerto Princesa is located in the middle of the island of Palawan. Palawan is 425 km long and from 8.5 to 40 km wide. The area of the island of Palawan is 12 188,6 sq. km. The island lies between the South China Sea, which is to the northwest, and the Sulu Sea in the southeast.
Spanish colonizers established a settlement here on 4 March 1872 with the goal of exploring the region. In 1894, the city was recognized as one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Already at that time, a convenient seaport had been built here.
The city is known for its crocodile farms and underground rivers. Not far from the city, the National Park of the Underground River was created, protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This natural phenomenon is explained by the presence of limestone karst mountain rock formations in the vicinity of the city, where cavities form easily, and where the water flows.
Palawan is probably the most exotic island in the entire Philippine archipelago. With a coastline of 2000 km - one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, it is also home to a protected area of thousands of square kilometers of coral reefs. The island is characterized by a breathtaking diversity of flora and fauna.
ClimateThe island is located in the influence zone of the southwest monsoon. Precipitation occurs from May to December; at other times of the year, Palawan has dry and hot weather. Throughout the year, the average daytime temperature ranges from 26 to 29 °C. The best time to visit Palawan is December-May, while from June to November there are prolonged downpours.
The Church of the Immaculate Conception was built in 1961 by Bishop Espida on the site of the first Christian Mass in the city, held in 1872. Designed in delicate white-and-blue tones, the church was built in a pseudo-Gothic style, evoking Medieval Europe.
12 km north of Puerto Princesa is one of the best places for a beach getaway-Honda Bay. The surface of Honda Bay is literally scattered with small islands, which gave rise to the local “signature” style of vacation and pleasant pastime-so-called “island hopping.” The “hoppers” are put in a boat and transported all day from one tiny island to another. The tour program may include, at your request, snorkeling (with equipment), lunch, and swimming and sunbathing stops. The most interesting are Snake Island (with excellent sandy beaches and a coral reef around the island), Pandan Island (beach and corals), and the small Starfish Island.
12 km south of the city is the Palawan Nature Protection Center (better known as the Crocodile Farm). Created in 1987 with funding from Japanese investors, it covers an area of 10 hectares and showcases the lives of crocodiles. You’ll learn a lot of interesting facts about these reptiles, including impressive skeletons and live five-meter characters. The center is open Mon-Fri 13.30-17.00, Sat 09.00-15,00, reptile feeding on Mon and Thu, 40 peso.
The Palawan underground river was put forward by the Philippines for the title of one of the “7 new wonders of the world” and, according to preliminary data, has made it into the list of finalists. The entire island of Palawan is riddled with caves, grottoes, and sinkholes. But along its western coast runs a truly unique geological formation - an underground river that claims to be the longest in the world. The river is accessible to ordinary people without any special speleological equipment and without tiring, multi-day expeditions. The underground tunnel is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list of natural monuments. Puerto Princessa Subterranean River National Park invites its guests to take a real walk to the center of the Earth.
