Fort Santa Catarina

Fort Santa Catarina is located in the southern part of the picturesque Portuguese town of Portimão. The fort stands on the left bank of the Arade River, directly where it flows into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The fort was built in the first half of the 17th century to protect the city from sudden enemy invasions. The fort’s walls still stand firmly, as if they were continuing their service even in peaceful times for the state. Today, numerous comfortable hotels have been built near the fort, and the notable Praia da Rocha beach has been equipped there, with a width exceeding 200 meters. At the walls of the fort, there is also a pier for small ships and yachts, as well as a variety of restaurants and cafeterias.

Praia da Rocha Beach

First of all, in Portimão people come to enjoy the beautiful local beaches along the Atlantic coast. The best-known is Praia da Rocha, located within walking distance of the city’s main harbour.
