Cape Canaveral is a headland on the Atlantic coast of the U.S. state of Florida, east of Merritt Island, which is separated from it by the Banana River. The cape is part of the so-called Space Coast (literally “Space Coast”); it is home to the U.S. Air Force base “Cape Canaveral.” Since many American spacecraft have been launched both from the station and from the nearby Merritt Island’s Kennedy Space Center, the names Cape Canaveral or Canaveral refer to both launch complexes. In memory of achievements in space exploration, Cape Canaveral was assigned telephone area code 321 (a reference to the countdown before launch).
The Port of Canaveral is a cruise, cargo, and seaport. Currently, it is the world’s second-largest cruise port and the home port for Disney Cruise Lines, Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean.
The name Canaveral for both the cape and the port was given in honor of the Spanish word “cañaveral,” which in translation means “thickets of cane.”

NASA Kennedy Space Center
