Pointe-à-Pitre is the largest city in the French West Indies and also the French department of Guadeloupe. The city covers an area of 2.66 sq. km. Population (1999 census): 28 360 residents. In the Pointe-à-Pitre urban agglomeration, more than 100,000 people live (a quarter of Guadeloupe’s population). The city is located on the island of Grande-Ter (Lesser Antilles, Leeward Islands) in the Caribbean Sea, 640 km from the South America coastline.
The year 1764 is considered the city’s founding date, when the French-who had regained this colony-built the city and began draining the swamps systematically. From that moment on, Pointe-à-Pitre began to develop as a port, largely thanks to pirate smuggling, but also through the export of sugarcane and fruits. Today, Pointe-à-Pitre is Guadeloupe’s main cargo and passenger port.
Guadeloupe consists of several islands, including two large ones, roughly equal in area, separated by the narrow Salt River strait. The western part-Basse-Terre-when translated from French means “low land.” However, despite this name, Basse-Terre is mountainous and made up of volcanic rock; the active Soufrière volcano (1467 m) is located there-the highest point in the Lesser Antilles. Grande-Ter, by contrast, is a plateau rising only up to 130 m, composed of limestone and volcanic tuffs. It is the lowest island compared to other parts of Guadeloupe. Elevations above sea level on Grande-Ter range from 30 to 135 meters. The shores of this island are surrounded by coral reefs.
Tourists arrive on the islands of Guadeloupe mainly for a beach holiday. Here you’ll find magnificent white-sand beaches washed by the emerald waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
ClimateGuadeloupe’s climate is tropical trade-wind. Even temperatures are typical (+24... +27 °C) and there is significant humidity (1500–2000 mm of precipitation per year). The rainy season lasts from July to November. Sometimes, tropical hurricanes strike the island during this time.

Гваделупа - рай для любителей пляжного отдыха. Здесь есть пляжи с белым (большинство пляжей), черным и золотистым песком. Средняя температура воды держится круглый год на отметке +26..+28°С. Пляжи Гваделупы оборудованы всем необходимым для отдыха, здесь есть хорошо развитая туристическая инфраструктура, функционируют объекты развлечений и транспорта. Гваделупа, кроме всего, уже давно является крупнейшим центром дайвинга в регионе. Здесь функционирует порядка 30 дайв-клубов, которые обеспечивают погружения приезжих туристов в районе коралловых рифов, а так же в местах, где на морском дне покоются десятки затонувших кораблей различных исторических периодов и эпох.
Национальный парк Гваделупа
Национальный парк Гваделупа, расположенный на острове Бас-Тер – это один из известнейших французских национальных парков. Вся растительность в парке поделена на три типа экосистем: влажные тропические леса, прибрежные леса и мангры. Среди растительного мира особого внимания заслуживают редкие виды орхидей, древовидных папоротников, красное дерево, а также гевея. Животный мир парка весьма экзотичен. Здесь можно обитают еноты, летучие мыши, мангусты, агути, фрегаты, колибри, пеликаны и другие птицы. Главные достопримечательности парка - величественный вулкан Ла Суфриер и потрясающие каскады водопадов Корбет. Парк является международным резерватом биосферы ЮНЕСКО.
Аквариум
Аквариум Гваделупы расположен в 5 километрах восточнее Пуант-а-Питра, в небольшом городке Госье. Он был создан в 1985 году и является самым посещаемым музеем на острове. Несмотря на относительно небольшой размер, это самый богатый аквариум с точки зрения видового разнообразия на Антильских островах. Здесь представлены почти 80 видов рыб и 50 видов кораллов. Аквариум предлагает увлекательные экотуры в мангровые лагуны и на коралловые рифы.

Экскурсия к вулкану Суфриер
На острове Гваделупа главной достопримечательностью является вулкан Суфриер. Ля-Суфриер (в переводе с французского «серный рудник») – активный вулкан, который извергался 8 раз, начиная с 1660 года. Относительно слабое по меркам геологов извержение в 1976-77 годах привело к неблагоприятным экономическим последствиям для столицы Бас-Тер, которая находится непосредственно у подножья вулкана – практически весь город был эвакуирован. Бесплодные черные склоны вулкана усеяны горячими источниками, грязевыми гейзерами и фумаролами (источниками сернистых газов). Ля-Суфриер – высочайшая точка Малых Антильских островов. С высоты вулканического массива открываются великолепные панорамные виды на море и тропические леса (гора находится на территории Национального Парка Гваделупы). Но, к сожалению, вершина Ля-Суфриер часто окутана облаками.
