Palamós, Spain

Palamós is one of the resorts in the northern part of the Costa Brava coastline (Spain). It is located in the province of Girona in the Baix Empordà region. It is one of the easternmost cities in Spain, situated right on the Mediterranean Sea, very close to the French border. It has a little more than 16,000 residents and was formed as a result of the merger of the city of Palamós and the village of Sant Joan de Palamós in 1942. The settlement on the site where Palamós is located today emerged in the 2500 - 1500 BC period. It is assumed that the founders of the settlement were the Greeks, based on the earlier name “Palæopolis,” but no documentary evidence has yet been found.

Since the 13th century, there has been a port here; by the way, today it is considered the second most important among the leisure and fishing ports of Catalonia. For many decades, Palamós existed as a village whose residents made their living from fishing and trading with cork tree bark, and only in the mid-previous century, when the tourist infrastructure here began to develop rapidly, it gained the status of a resort town.

The city’s architecture remains virtually unchanged, however there is a rapid growth of urban districts to the south and a gradual merging with the resort of Sant Antoni de Calonge.

This resort is chosen for quiet, private getaways. On the picturesque Palamós beaches, there are rarely crowds, except during the peak season, when all the hotels in Palamós are full. But even during the most popular summer period in Palamós it is easy to find hidden coves away from prying eyes and wild beaches. The noisiest area of the Palamós resort is La Fosca. It is here that you can find the largest number of shops, bars, and restaurants. Palamós restaurants are especially worth mentioning. Local cuisine is famous for its seafood dishes, which always receive admiring reviews from tourists. Guests are served the freshest seafood, caught the very same day by Palamós fishermen.

Today, Palamós is a major port (with the closure of the port of Palamós Feliu, it is the only commercial port in the province of Girona) with one of the last remaining fishing fleets in this part of the Mediterranean coast. It is known for large, sometimes gigantic, prawns that you can enjoy in any seaside restaurant. The big bay on whose coast Palamós is located attracts sailing enthusiasts, fans of yachting, and windsurfing lovers.

An amazingly clean and clear sea, beautiful sandy beaches, lovely coves, and romantic bays hidden behind steep sea cliffs, attract nature lovers who prefer a calm vacation.

The climate in the Costa Brava throughout the year is characterized by mildness. Rain here in winter and summer is not uncommon, and that is precisely what explains the abundance of greenery. The highest rainfall occurs in September and October. The bathing season begins at the very end of May; in October, people no longer swim on this resort. In winter, snow is a frequent occurrence.
