Nouméa, New Caledonia

Description — Nouméa, New Caledonia

Nouméa is the capital of the island of New Caledonia. A port on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Population - 97 579 people (2009), including suburbs - 163 723. City area - 45.7 sq. km. The city is located not far from the south-eastern end of New Caledonia. New Caledonia is an archipelago, an overseas special administrative territorial entity of France, located in the Pacific Ocean. It is represented by a large island of the same name and a group of small islands in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean, in Melanesia. It borders to the south-west with Australia’s economic zone, to the north with Vanuatu, and to the south-east with Fiji. The largest island of the archipelago is Grand Terre, where its capital is located.

The first settlement here was established in 1851. At first the area was used as a penal colony, and later as a center for processing nickel and gold that were mined nearby.

Today, Nouméa is a typical European city. It is comfortable and modern, with a perfectly well-run entertainment industry, bright lights of nightclubs, restaurants, and casinos. Nouméa is perfect for beach holidays. The combination of stunning southern landscapes and refined French style places the town among the leading resorts. Along the ocean coastline stretches a magnificent coral reef, creating a unique ecosystem for the habitat of 1.5 thousand species of exotic fish. It is considered the second-largest barrier reef in the world after Australia’s. In the vicinity of the city of Nouméa, traditional villages of the indigenous people of New Caledonia - the Kanak people - are scattered. The city’s architecture is represented mainly by buildings from the colonial era.

Climate

Tropical trade-wind, hot and humid. The temperature changes little throughout the year - the average in winter (from April to August) is about +19-23 C, and in summer (November-March) +24-26 C. Annual rainfall ranges from 3000 mm in the eastern part of the archipelago to 700 mm in the west. Mostly, rains fall during the period from December-January to March, during the passage of cyclones. During this time, cloudy weather and powerful tropical hurricanes are typical. From September to November-December, the trade-wind season lasts, when the weather is very windy but the sky is clear.

Pictured Rocks Bluff

Pictured Rocks Bluff

Pierced Rock Cliffs (Pircé de Rock) is one of New Caledonia’s most interesting natural attractions. The cliffs are famous above all for the largest monolith of Le Bonhomme that rises from the water and for its caves, where guided excursions are organized. You can explore the cliffs from land or reach them by ferry. The Pierced Rock caves have been studied by geologists and scientists; traces of the oldest rock formations have been found here, and samples are on display in the geological museum. Inside the cliffs’ caves, you can go rock climbing and speleboarding-an experienced guide and modern equipment will help you with that. For those who prefer a more relaxed type of leisure, it’s worth admiring the Le Bonhomme monolith rising from the water like a giant tooth of a fossilized creature. The view of the Pierced Rock cliffs is especially spectacular at sunset.

Winery tours in the Aménieu-Pass Valley

Winery tours in the Aménieu-Pass Valley

In the Amé Pass valley there are extensive vineyard plantations and many wineries. The first Europeans landed on the shores of New Caledonia in the mid-19th century. They were French, who immediately set up colonies here. The local soil was very fertile, and the climate conditions were quite suitable for growing grapes. That is why they quickly established grape cultivation and wine production here. By the way, the wine from the wineries of the Amé Pass valley is much sweeter than wine of the same variety grown in France. This is explained by an abundance of sunshine and the special fertility of the soil. On the excursion through the valley, you can learn all the wine-making technologies and taste this noble beverage.
