Port of call
Nidri is a town and municipality on the island of Lefkada (Ionian Islands) in Greece. It forms part of the Ellomenos municipality. The community also includes the village of Rachi. The town is a major tourist center. Nidri lies on the eastern coast of the island of Lefkada, 17 km south of the town of Lefkada, at the mouth of the long Vlikho Bay bay. In the sea near the town, there are a number of islands: Meganisi, Madouri, Cheloni, Filia, Skorpidi and Skorpios (until recently, the island was privately owned by the Onassis family, where Aristotle Onassis is buried, along with his son Alexander, who owned the neighboring island of Sparti, and his daughter Christina). In Nidri harbor, a monument to Aristotle Onassis has been installed.
Today, Nidri is one of the best and most popular resorts on Lefkada. Excellent beaches, crystal-clear and warm waters of the Ionian Sea, as well as well-developed tourist infrastructure, attract an enormous number of holidaymakers here every year. Nidri offers a good selection of hotels and cozy apartments, many excellent restaurants and taverns, as well as supermarkets, markets, ATMs, pharmacies, and much more. Along the promenade, you’ll find many charming bars, cafés, and various tourist shops.
Those who enjoy active recreation can take part in various water sports in Nidri, as well as go cycling or explore the picturesque surroundings. Nidri has a small own port where numerous fishing boats, sailboats, and luxurious white yachts are moored. Here, you can rent a motorboat or a yacht and visit Lefkada’s satellite islands, as well as scenic secluded bays and the island’s famous beaches. There is also regular ferry service to the islands of Meganisi, Ithaca, and Kefalonia. Nidri Port is the center of Lefkada’s sailing sport and the place where, every year in September, the famous Ionian Regatta starts.
ClimateLefkada is one of the best places to relax. This is due to the wonderful Mediterranean climate, which seems to invite rest and creates a good mood. You can visit Lefkada at any time of year-both in summer, when average temperatures reach up to +30 degrees, and in winter, when the temperature never drops below +25 degrees. The sea is always warm enough for comfortable swimming and diving.
The waterfront stretches along the entire town and is a wonderful place for strolls, shopping, and lunch or dinner. There are plenty of cozy restaurants and shops offering a wide selection of souvenirs and beautiful little trinkets.
Nidri waterfalls are an amazing natural wonder. They are located in a gorge, about 4 kilometers above the resort. In mid-summer they turn into small streams, but even then it’s incredibly beautiful and cool here. A walking trail about 800 meters long leads to the waterfalls. As you get closer, the waterfalls become more spectacular and more breathtaking. Experienced travelers recommend packing water and wearing comfortable shoes for a walk in this area, as the climb is quite rocky. For those who would like to grab a bite to eat and relax, there’s a small taverna here.
On the island of Lefkada there are countless beautiful beaches, but Porto Katsiki, probably one of the most delightful. This is a true paradise spot, located not far from the village of Athani. Here, the white cliffs create a perfect contrast with crystal-clear blue waters, while the fine, warm sand and lush vegetation provide the best conditions for a relaxing getaway. The beach infrastructure offers everything you need: umbrellas, sun loungers, cafés and massage rooms. Those who want to get away and enjoy nature can hide from the scorching sunrays in the shade of steep cliffs and enjoy the sound of the sea. The beach has its own parking lot. This place is ideal both for a peaceful family holiday and for spending time with a loud, friendly group.
Lefkada is located on the north-eastern edge of the island. Here you’ll find a bridge that connects Lefkada island and Aetolo-Acarnania. It is in the area around this bridge that the ruins of the Fort of Saint Maura are located. The fortress was designed and built by Orsini; its restoration was carried out by all the Venetians and the Turks. In Lefkada there are several ancient churches of incredible beauty and powerful energy: the churches of Saint Minas, Saint Demetrius, Saint Spyridon, and Saint Pantokrator. All these churches are built in the Baroque style, with beautiful frescoes inside. Near Lefkada, on the opposite hill, there is a breathtaking view of the city and the seafront. This is where the Faneromeni Monastery, created back in the 17th century, is located.
