New Mangalore is one of two ports in the main port city of the state of Karnataka (India) - Mangaluru. The city is located 350 km west of the state capital, Bangalore, on the Malabar Coast of the Arabian Sea at the foot of the Western Ghats. The administrative center of the Dakshina Kannada district (formerly South Kanara) in the south-west of Karnataka. With untouched beaches, wide roads and quiet neighborhoods, Mangaluru is recognized as the 8th cleanest city in India. The city area is 200 sq. km.
The first references to the city date back to the beginning of the 8th century AD, where it is mentioned as Managapapuram. In the Kannada language, the name means the City of Mangaladevi. Another name in the Tulu language, Kudla, means “confluence of rivers” - Mangalore is located on the Nethravathi and Phalguni rivers.
Nowadays, Mangalor is a major port city, the main line of income of which is trade, in particular the export of coffee, cashews, tea and sandalwood. In industry, tile manufacturing, coffee processing and the production of chemical fertilizers are developed.
