Palamidi Fortress
Palamidi was built by the Venetians from 1686 to 1715. It was a grand project, and the fortress turned out to be of impressive size, built in the Baroque style. But even right after the construction was completed, Palamidi was taken by the Turks, and it was not possible to recapture it until 1822. From the fortress, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the sea bay, the city of Nafplion, and the surrounding lands. To get up to the fortress, you’ll have to climb 857 steps of a spiral staircase. And if you decide to reach the very top, then the total number of steps will exceed one thousand. To attract tourists, the locals have found a “golden mean” and call it 999 steps-beautiful and mysterious.
Akronafplia Fortress
The Acro-naphplia Fortress, also known as Itz-Kale, is located on a high hill above the city of Nafplion. The fort’s gates, built in the 15th century, are adorned with a beautiful relief depicting a Venetian lion. Not far from the gates there is an ancient acropolis. The Acro-naphplia Fortress was built in the 1710s. This is Greece’s oldest and largest fortress. Acro-naphplia was conquered twice: by the Turks in 1715 and by Greek rebels in 1822. Translated from Turkish, Itz-Kale means “inner fortress.” Of the four fort towers, only some fragments have survived. For some time, the fort was used as a prison for political prisoners; today, the fortress has been converted into a hotel.
