The official name of Mystery Island is Inyek Island, which belongs to the province of Tafea in the island nation of Vanuatu. From a geographical point of view, the island is part of Melanesia-a group of island clusters in the Pacific Ocean.

The Melanesian state of Vanuatu is an island chain of a Y-shaped form, stretching from north to south for 1176 km. The nearest state, the Solomon Islands, is located approximately 170 km north of Vanuatu, New Caledonia - 230 km to the south-west, Fiji - 800 km to the east, Australia - 1750 km to the west. Total land area - 12 190 sq. km. The population of Vanuatu - 234 023 people (2009). Capital - the city Port Vila.

From a geological perspective, the islands of Vanuatu are young, and their formation took place through four main stages of volcanic activity. Structurally, the islands consist mostly of erupted volcanic rock. The modern name of the country, Vanuatu, means “this land forever.” It became officially used starting from 30 July 1980, when the islands gained independence from the United Kingdom and France. Before that, the archipelago was called “New Hebrides.” It was given in 1774 by English explorer James Cook in honor of the Hebrides islands located to the west of Scotland.

Vanuatu has a humid tropical climate, close to equatorial. Rainfall ranges from 2500 to 4000 mm. From May to October (winter months), south-easterly breezes blow over the New Hebrides. As a result, there are sunny days and cool nights. From November to April, the air is very humid due to very frequent and heavy downpours. During this time of year, there are high temperatures and frequent cyclones.

The average annual temperature varies from +29 °C to +17 °C. The rainy season across all islands of Vanuatu lasts from January to March. The wettest month of the year is February (20 rainy days). The driest months are August and September. Average annual rainfall is 2360 mm.
