Lemnos is an island in the Aegean Sea and belongs to Greece. It is part of the North-Eastern Aegean Islands group. The island’s area is 477 km². The population is 17,000 people (2001). There are more than 30 settlements on the island. The capital of the island is Mirina (until 1950 - Kastron), the second-largest city is Moudros.
The island is of volcanic origin. It is composed mainly of schists and volcanic tuffs. Elevation reaches up to 430 m.
The island is not widely known as a tourist destination, and it is possible to enjoy a quiet, peaceful holiday here. Everything you need for a rest is available: beautiful bays and beaches, a variety of hotels ranging from bungalow complexes to rented rooms, a large number of places of interest, restaurants, and shops.
The local population carries out agriculture traditional for the North-Eastern islands of the Aegean Sea. Wheat is grown, grapes are cultivated, mulberry trees and fruit trees grow, while there are few olive groves. Beekeepers produce honey. Various types of cheese are made: the traditional feta, Kalathaki, which is prepared in small baskets, and dry cheese that dries in the sun. Until the 1960s, cotton was cultivated on the island, with quality comparable to Egyptian cotton. Lemnos is famous for its muscat wines.
The North-Eastern Aegean Islands (East Aegean Islands) are
eleven main islands of the Aegean Sea, as well as many smaller islets stretched out in a row along a zigzag line that begins at
Kavala in Macedonia and extends to the Dodecanese. The islands in this part of the Aegean Sea
do not form a separate group.
КлиматThe island has a climate typical of the Mediterranean. It is
quite warm in winter (+10-15° C) and hot in summer. The peak of high temperatures falls in June - September. During these months, the heated sun warms up the air masses to +30 degrees.
On Lemnos, unlike many other Greek islands, strong winds blow, reaching their maximum around 12 hours, which is well known to windsurfing enthusiasts, who choose this period for their trip to the sea. In autumn and spring, for tourists visiting Lemnos, holidays take place in comfortable +18-20 degrees. This is a great time for exploring numerous historical sites, taking sea excursions, and horseback riding.
