Columbus House
Columbus House (Casa Colon) - the former residence of the Governor of the island, where in August 1492 Christopher Columbus stayed for a few days while one of his ships was being repaired during the voyage to the shores of the New World. Today, the Great Age of Geographical Discoveries Museum is located here, featuring both authentic artifacts from that era and reconstructions related to the famous journeys of outstanding seafarers.
Church of San Antonio Abad
The small Church of San Antonio Abad (Ermita de San Antonio Abad) was built in 1777 and is associated with the name of Christopher Columbus. Here Columbus prayed on several occasions before setting off again to sail across the ocean.
St. Anne’s Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint Anne (Catedral de Santa Ana) on the eponymous square was built over 400 years, starting in 1497, which is reflected in the building’s architectural form. From the cathedral’s south tower, where you can go up by elevator, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city and the harbor.
Bishop’s Palace
On Plaza de Santa Ana you can also find the Episcopal Palace (Palacio Episcopal), built in the early 16th century and rebuilt in 1630 after the siege of the city by the Dutch, the Las Palmas town hall, and eight bronze dogs-exactly the same as those on the coat of arms of the Canary Islands.
Museum of the Canary Islands
The Museum of the Canary Islands (Museo Canario), founded in 1879, will tell you about the life of the native inhabitants of Gran Canaria before the Spanish colonization: here you can see Guanche jewelry and tools, cave paintings, everyday items, and mummies.
