Description — King’s Wharf, Bermuda Islands

Kings Wharf - a cruise ship pier capable of accommodating giant ocean liners, which look especially impressive against the backdrop of small islands and modest colorful houses. In the past, almost all ships traveling from the Old World to Washington passed through this pier, and it was even called the "Western Gibraltar." The port is located on the northwestern tip of Ireland Island, which is part of the Bermudas.

Ireland Island is the northwesternmost island in the chain of the Bermudas. It lies in Sandys Parish and forms the northwestern coastline of Great Sound harbor. The island is considered one of the six main Bermuda islands.

The Bermudas are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, located on a group of coral islands in the northwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean, 900 km from North America. The Bermudas include 150 islands and reefs, of which about 20 are inhabited, and 10 are connected by bridges and overpasses, forming the main island - Main Island.

Climate

The climate on the islands is very pleasant. The reason is that they lie along the path of the Gulf Stream. Warm weather stays here year-round due to the warm air masses it creates. In summer, the air temperature stays around +26°C, and in winter - about +17°C. The summer and winter seasons are divided roughly the same way as in central Russia. Therefore, from May to October you can safely head to the Bermudas.

In winter, it can feel cool: cold winds blow and rain is not uncommon, but the air temperature rarely drops below +14°C. The humidity on the islands, however, is quite high-around 1000 mm of precipitation falls per year. Moreover, rain can happen even in summer, though it comes in the form of tropical downpours that pass fairly quickly. From June to November, hurricane season runs. There is no need to be afraid of them-they practically never cause damage. Most often, it is simply a strong gusty wind.

Sights

Fort St. Catherine

Fort St. Catherine

This is the largest of all historic ports in Bermuda, and one of the most exciting attractions. From this spot, the views of the coastline and the island itself are truly magnificent. Nearby there is a beach where the island’s first settlers landed after a shipwreck in 1607. This is one of the early fortification structures, serving as defense against the Spanish, the French, and much later against the Americans. Here you can find many artillery cannons, tunnels, bastions, and drawbridges over the fortress moats. There are replicas of the Treasures of the British Crown, fascinating series of filmstrips, a rare collection of antique weapons, as well as video films about Bermuda and its history.

What to see

Beaches

Beaches

The coral origin of the islands contributed to the formation of extensive beaches with pinkish sand. All of this, taken together, helps develop beach tourism on the islands. The beaches run along almost the entire north and south coasts of Bermuda, especially along the shores of Great Sound. Bermuda’s beaches are famous for their cleanliness and beautiful sand. If you’d like to see sand in the most beautiful and vibrant shades, you should visit the island of Bermuda. The beaches on the shores of Warwick-Lang Bay, Horseshoe Bay, and Jobson’s Cove are particularly popular with vacationers. You should also take a look at the beaches located near the towns, in particular Elbow Beach near Hamilton, as well as the beaches near the town of St. David.

Crystal Cave

Crystal Cave

The Crystal Cave is located near the city of Hamilton-the capital of the Bermuda Islands. An amazing discovery of the cave was made by two teenage boys who were looking for cricket balls lost in the grass. This is how the fairy-tale place was found in 1905. Just 2 years after the discovery, the cave became a tourist attraction in Bermuda. The cave has clean, deep lakes with such clear water that you can see their bottom. The Crystal Cave is a wonderful place to admire stalactites and stalagmites. According to tourists, it is never cold in the cave.

Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo

Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo

At the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ) there are more than 300 species of birds, reptiles, and mammals from many islands around the world. The aquarium is home to more than 200 species of fish. BAMZ is not only an entertainment, but also a conservation and scientific institution. Here, a living coral reef with its unique ecosystem has been recreated. In an interactive nature museum, an audio-visual program is presented, telling about Bermuda’s unique geology-where the story of the island’s birth comes truly to life, having originally existed as an underwater volcano. Adults and children are always delighted by the zoo. The grounds include miniature gardens, secluded walking paths, and specialized areas for children.

Botanical Gardens

Botanical Gardens

One of the main attractions of Bermuda is the Botanical Gardens. 35 acres of well-kept, landscaped park grounds feature hundreds of flowers, shrubs and trees, including a significant collection of subtropical fruit plants, hibiscus, and banyan trees. There are also aviaries for exotic and singing birds, and even a garden for the blind. Special walking tours are offered by the Bermuda Botanical Society on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:30. The gardens themselves are open for free visits from 9:30 to 15:30 daily, except on holidays. On-site, there is a small craft shop where you can buy absolutely unique souvenirs.

Bermuda Maritime Museum

Bermuda Maritime Museum

Bermuda Maritime Museum is the largest museum exploring Bermuda’s military history from the 16th century. The museum is located on the grounds of the former Royal Naval Fort KIP (1819) on Ireland Island. After the military base was closed in the late 1950s, the museum took over the site in 1974, after which restoration work began. The 10-acre fort protected against possible attacks from both land and sea. The Commissioner’s House is used as an exhibition center for numerous displays and exhibitions. Other buildings showcase shipwreck artifacts and local vessels. A small building displays the yacht "Dainty" - a local participant in the Bermuda Races, which was built more than a century ago. At the KIP pond you can interact with dolphins.

Dolphinarium

Dolphinarium

The Bermuda Dolphinarium is located in the city of Somerset. Here you can not only swim with dolphins-for the whole day if you like-but also try training this amazing marine animal. For young children from three years old, there are small pools where kids can feed the dolphins, play with them, and even swim together with them, holding onto their backs. You can also host a children’s birthday at the dolphinarium with the dolphins’ participation, contests, and games. There is a fee for the experience, but the child will get a lot of fun and remember this celebration for life. A dolphinarium is exactly the place where you can take a wonderful break, have a great time, and simply recharge your energy!

Hamilton Sightseeing Tour

Hamilton Sightseeing Tour

Hamilton is the main city of Bermuda. The city has preserved buildings from the Victorian era, as well as later structures created in a wide variety of architectural styles. The city’s main attraction is the Cathedral of Bermuda, a grandiose building in the neo-Gothic style. Fort Hamilton is also worth attention-a majestic structure built in the mid-19th century. The fortress is equipped with 10-inch guns capable of firing stormy volleys at enemy ships. The Historical Museum is also very interesting. The exhibition features an extensive collection of items from the Age of Great Geographic Discoveries. Other city attractions include the Royal Square, the City Hall, the oldest building in the archipelago-the Government Residence (1620), as well as the “pillory” and the “turning throne”-a place for the public execution of criminals.
