Formally, Taiwan is an administrative unit of the PRC.

Pagodas of the Tiger and the Dragon

Pagodas of the Tiger and the Dragon

There are many architectural masterpieces in Gaoshuan, one of which is the Tiger and Dragon Pagodas, located on the Lotus Lake. It is simply a fairy-tale structure comprising two seven-story buildings. Upon entering, the tourist finds themselves in the huge mouth of a dragon, and upon exiting, they are “spit out” by the terrifying throat of a tiger. Each level of the structure is crowned with wide white balconies, and on both roofs there are charming peaks shaped like miniature pagodas. As darkness falls, this place becomes wonderfully beautiful-thousands of lanterns light up here. The pagodas got their name for a reason: the tiger and the dragon are Chinese talisman animals that protect people from evil forces and give them courage and confidence.

Confucius Temple

Confucius Temple

One of the main architectural sights of the city of Kaohsiung is the Confucian Temple, located on the right bank of the Lotus Lake. It was built in an architectural style typical of the Song Dynasty. Grand and solemn, it is the largest Confucian temple in Taiwan. The building is divided into several main sections, including altars, a library, and the temple itself. To the left of the sanctuary there is a bridge with huge bronze plaques on it depicting the life and teachings of Confucius. The first floor of the structure is designed like a small balcony, supported along the perimeter by columns painted in a deep maroon color. On the roof of the sanctuary, a yellow ornament stands out, characteristic of buildings of this type.

Pei Qi Pavilion

Pei Qi Pavilion

Pei Qi Pavilion is one of the city’s main attractions in Kaohsiung. You can see it from afar: next to the structure stands a statue of the deity Beiji Suan Tian, 72 meters tall. The pavilion features a neat two-tier pagoda: the first floor is made in the shape of a balcony supported by short columns. Between the statue and the pavilion there is a small arched bridge and a wonderful fountain. As evening falls, both structures are illuminated, as is the entire avenue leading to them. Celebratory events are often held here, during which fireworks are launched, people change into traditional outfits, and they dance and sing. This place is one of the most popular in the city.

What to see

Shushan Zoo

Shushan Zoo

Shushan Zoo in Kaohsiung opened in 1978. The main difference of this Taiwanese zoo from others is that practically all the animals, except tigers, lions and bears, are not kept in cages and instead move freely around the grounds. They’ve all become so tame that they’re not afraid of visitors and calmly come closer for a treat. By the way, Shushan’s only rule is that you can’t bring food for the animals with you. Treats can be purchased on the park grounds. In addition, the zoo holds animal shows every day. These can include tug-of-war with a buffalo, ostrich races, tricks with macaques, and lunch with chimpanzees. The park staff also invite guests to watch how the predators are fed.

Chichin Island

Chichin Island

Chichin Island is a small outlying island of the city of Kaohsiung. Here you can find a famous beach and several noteworthy architectural landmarks-remains of a fortress, a lantern, and an ancient temple. A trip to Chichin is a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Along the shoreline there are restaurants where seafood dishes are prepared, and at open-air markets, trade is in full swing-you can buy almost any kind of marine life here. The island’s main architectural attraction is the fortress-battery, built in the early 19th century to defend the city, as well as the lighthouse erected in 1883. The Tian-Hu Island Temple, dating back to 1673, is the oldest temple in all of Kaohsiung.

E-DA Theme Amusement Park

E-DA Theme Amusement Park

E-DA Theme is home to the largest entertainment theatre, the tallest Ferris wheel and the largest indoor leisure center throughout Taiwan. The theatre’s exterior resembles Greece, with its mysterious buildings and alleyways, with a hint of Roman architecture. From the Ferris wheel, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Kaohsiung and its surroundings. In the park, you can watch a spectacular water show and see a volcanic eruption. The visit to the park will be a thrilling experience not only for children but also for adults. This is the only amusement park in Taiwan that the entire island’s residents truly take pride in.

Kending National Park

Kending National Park

Kending is one of the oldest national parks in Taiwan. The park is widely known for its coral reefs, sandy beaches, waterfalls, and a lighthouse. Local beaches are no less impressive than those found at upscale resorts. In the western part of the park, you can find unusual picturesque corals. There are hundreds and thousands of them here-of all different sizes, species, and colors. A little further on, a series of wonderful waterfalls comes into view. In the northern part of Kending National Park, there are true tropical forests that are perfect for on-foot eco-tourism. In addition, the Kending park hosts annual music and entertainment festivals.
