Ilhabela is the largest of the islands located close to San Sebastian. It rises dramatically from the waters of the Atlantic, covered in tropical vegetation across the mountain slopes, which are crisscrossed by mountain streams. The island’s coastline is indented by dozens of coves and highlighted by wide stretches of beaches. On weekends, the island is a favorite getaway spot for city residents, while on weekdays-except during holiday season-its beaches are deserted. A significant portion of the forest area falls within the Ilhabela State Park and is protected by the government. There are many wild inhabitants in the forest. To avoid being bothered by the bloodthirsty borrachudos flies, it is recommended to get a protective repellent.In the forests of Ilhabela there are many large and small waterfalls. But to admire their beauty, travelers will have to tackle multi-kilometer mountain trails. The sound of the Cascatа do Toca waterfall, cascading into a chain of lakes, can be heard from Perequê Beach. The Cascatа do Água Branca waterfall, which includes a series of mountain water bodies, is even larger. You can reach it via a trail that takes about an hour of uphill walking from the entrance to the State Park.
