Ilhabela is the largest of the islands located near San Sebastián. It rises high from the Atlantic waters, covered with tropical vegetation on the mountain slopes, laced with mountain streams. The island’s coastline is carved up into dozens of bays and accentuated by wide stretches of beach. On weekends, the island is a favorite getaway for city residents, while on weekdays-except during holiday season-its beaches are deserted. A significant portion of the forest area falls within the Ilhabela State Park and is protected by the government. In the forest, there are many wild inhabitants. To prevent getting bothered by the bloodthirsty borrachudos flies, it is recommended to get a protective repellent.In the forests of Ilhabela, there are many large and small waterfalls. But to admire their beauty, travelers will have to cover several kilometers of mountain trails. The roar of the Cachoeira da Toca waterfall, spilling in a cascade into a chain of lagoons, can be heard on Perequê Beach. The Cachoeira da Água Branca waterfall, which includes a series of mountain water bodies, is even bigger. You can reach it via a trail with an hour-long hike up from the entrance to the State Park.
