Description — Hue-Danang (Chan May), Vietnam

For a long time, the port of Chan May only welcomed cargo ships and only in recent years has it become a cruise port. It is located in Central Vietnam, on the coast of the South China Sea, at approximately equal distance from two important and ancient Vietnamese cities-Da Nang and Hue.

At the port itself, there is no infrastructure for arriving passengers; travelers depart from here to Da Nang, Hue, or to explore other historical and cultural sights in the country, which are numerous in this region-for example, the Marble Mountains with their caves and pagodas, the Cham Islands with beautiful beaches and clear, crystal-clear water, and the ancient My Son temple complex.

Climate

The climate here is monsoonal. The timing of the dry and wet seasons in central Vietnam, which includes Chan May, does not match the north and south of the country. The dry season in this region lasts from January to July, and the wet season from August to December. In October-November, the region experiences continuous invasions of the strongest tropical typhoons.

For a beach holiday, the best season is May-August, because during this period the sea is relatively calm and there are almost no rains. The average annual temperature is +26 C. In June-August it stays around 30 C; in December-February it is 18–23 C. Water temperature during the dry season is 25–29 degrees.

What to see

Bàt Ma National Park

Bàt Ma National Park

The name of the Ba Be National Park translates as “white horse,” which is associated with the constantly hovering fluffy clouds over the park. The park’s flora includes about 1,700 species of unique plants, some of which are listed in the Red Book of Vietnam. The most well-known is the red rhododendron-during its flowering season, tourists come here from all over the world. The park’s fauna is represented by 250 species of animals and birds. The populations of the white-cheeked gibbon and the Duke langur are especially numerous. Ba Be is the only national park in the country located close to the coastline. Its visitors can take a stroll along the impressive pheasant trail, which is located in the tropical forest. In addition, there is the Rhododendron Waterfall, offering a fantastic spectacle.

My Son Temple Complex

My Son Temple Complex

These ancient temples, hidden in the valley, are remarkable in that neither time (the complex is 800 years old) nor American bombs-which, admittedly, caused significant damage to the complex-were able to destroy them. There are about 70 structures here in total: altars, towers, and temples dedicated to the gods Shiva and Vishnu. Visitors can also find royal tombs containing stelae with the names of the deceased engraved on them. Starting in the mid-1980s, a major restoration was carried out at My Son; a few years later, the complex was opened to visitors, and by 1999 it was recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site.

Da Nang Highlights Tour

Da Nang Highlights Tour

An overview tour of Da Nang and its surroundings includes a visit to the Linh Ung Temple on Son Tra Peninsula, where there is a 67-meter Buddha statue, the Museum of the Fifth Military Zone, and the Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son). The Marble Mountains consist of five rocky hills that once were islands and were formed from marble. As the legend goes, each of them represents one of the five elements of the universe and has a corresponding name: Thuy Son (Water), Moc Son (Wood), Hoa Son (Fire), Kim Son (Metal), and Tho Son (Earth). In the largest and most famous one-Thuy Son-there is a series of natural caves (dong), where, over the past centuries, Buddhist shrines were built. After that, you will visit the Non Nuoc stone carvers’ village and have lunch at a restaurant.

Hue Sightseeing Tour

Hue Sightseeing Tour

The main city landmark is the river with the romantic name “Fragrant,” and all the important places to see are located nearby. The most striking is the enormous - 2.5 by 2.5 kilometers - fortress with a red flag flying at the top - the imperial citadel of Kinh Thanh on the bank opposite the city. A dozen and a half of the imperial tombs are spread along both banks (the most interesting and best preserved is the tomb of Emperor Hai Dinh, guarded by an army of stone guard-monitors with moustaches - located 10 kilometers from the city). From the Fragrant River, you can also see the city symbol - the Thiên Mụ pagoda. It is 4 kilometers from the center of Huế and is easy to spot from afar by its distinctive 21-meter multi-faceted tower. Huế is one of the calmest and most pleasant places in all of Vietnam.
