Description — Hobart, Tasmania

Hobart is the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania. Founded in 1804, it is the second-oldest city in Australia (the oldest is Sydney, 1788). In 2005, the population of the urban area was 245 thousand people. The city is the financial and administrative center of Tasmania. Hobart is located at the mouth of the Derwent River, in the southeast of the island of Tasmania.

The first settlement at the site of the modern city was established in 1803, in Risdon Bay on the eastern banks of the Derwent River. In 1804, the settlement was moved to a better location-to Sullivan Bay. Named in honor of Lord Hobart, the Minister for the Colonies. Originally, the city was a prison where convicts were brought from all over the British Empire. The city also played an important role in establishing Britain on the Australian continent.

Hobart is an important seaport. As a deep-water port, it was ideal for basing whaling ships; that is where a shipbuilding center and some other types of industry also developed. Whaling has long been banned, and today the city is a tourist center. It is known for wonderful historic buildings, vineyards on the hills, scenic views, and a yacht club.

The city of Hobart, like the whole island of Tasmania, is quite unlike the rest of Australia. Here, the climate, nature, and landscapes are completely different-reminding you of England, then of Africa, then of New Zealand. High in the mountains, glaciers are hidden away; the plateau is painted with colorful wildflowers, and across the plains shrubs spread like a dense carpet. From Hobart, you can set off on the most fascinating excursions to Tasmania’s national parks-a region where a relict forest and unique animals have survived, for example, the famous Tasmanian devil. And Hobart carefully preserves the memory of the colonial era. Many old houses, a Roman Catholic church, and a bridge built from sandstone two centuries ago by the hands of prisoners.

Climate

Hobart has a temperate oceanic climate. Tasmania’s climate is very similar to the climate of Southern England, Ireland, and the Atlantic coast of France, and therefore was very comfortable for British settlers. Hobart is characterized by year-round dominance of overcast weather, with rare hot spells during the summer when warm air is brought in from the mainland, and a mild winter in the winter season. The amount of precipitation changes hardly at all throughout the year, with rain falling evenly. Seasonal fluctuations are very small.

Average winter temperature is +16 °C, average summer temperature is +8.5 °C.

Cascade Brewery

Cascade Brewery

The famous Cascade Brewery is the oldest and most beautiful in Australia. Built in 1824, it still produces beer of magnificent taste qualities. The brewery was created by Peter Degraves, a man of extraordinary practical acumen and great business ability. In just two years, he managed to open sawmills and mills in Tasmania, create Hobart’s water supply system, build the Royal Theatre, and become the pioneer of brewing in Australia. The building itself, where the beer was brewed, looks like a medieval European palace made of granite. Its stepped façade resembles the façades of royal palaces. Today, you can visit the Cascade Brewery on a guided tour, which ends with a traditional tasting of several beer varieties.

What to see

Royal Botanical Garden

Royal Botanical Garden

In addition to a rich collection of rare plants, the garden offers visitors the chance to explore fascinating historic buildings on its grounds. The Botanical Garden was created in 1818 on the left bank of the River Derwent. At first, it operated as the Governor-General William Davidson’s garden, and access here was limited. They say that for many years, free labor from prisoners was used to improve and maintain the garden. Thanks to them, a unique hollow wall was created to heat fruit trees. The Botanical Garden consists of several themed areas: the Japanese and fruit gardens, a tropical forest, an old pond with lilies, and the world’s only greenhouse with subarctic plants.

Mount Field National Park

Mount Field National Park

Mount Field National Park features picturesque mountain landscapes, heather moorlands, pristine lakes, and magnificent cascading waterfalls. At the park entrance, all the necessary information is provided for visitors: driving routes, main attractions, and the distances to them. The most vivid highlight of the trip may be the Russell Falls. Its powerful flow, wrapping the rocky outcrops in a dense veil, was recognized as a natural monument as far back as 1885, and the area around it was declared protected. Fine examples of tree ferns will allow you to mentally travel back millions of years to the age of dinosaurs. Within the park, you can spot the platypus, the echidna, and even the Tasmanian devil.

Hastings Caves

Hastings Caves

The Hastings Caves, located south of Hobart, are considered one of Tasmania’s most vibrant natural attractions. The caves in this area began to form almost 40 million years ago, but their breathtaking beauty was revealed to people only in 1917. That’s when lumberjacks, quite by accident, discovered an entrance to the underground galleries. In this underground realm there are stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and unusual helictites-delicate calcite tendrils that grow in all directions like fine threads. You can round out your introduction to the underground world with a swim in a thermal pool located near the cave. Set in a picturesque spot, it is surrounded by dense forest of tree ferns.

Port Arthur Prison

Port Arthur Prison

Port Arthur is known for the fact that until 1877, a convict prison was located here, considered one of the most dreadful prisons in the world. It held the most notorious criminals. In the prison built in 1933, about 13,000 inmates served their sentences, 2,000 of whom died there. The Port Arthur prison was a complex of 60 buildings, including a hospital with a morgue, a Catholic chapel, a cathedral, a psychiatric hospital, a bakery, a laundry, a kitchen, and the commandant’s residence. Today, the Port Arthur prison is open to tourists. Inside the prison walls, actors stage scenes from the prisoners’ lives. Excursions are also offered to Dead Island, where the prison cemetery is located.

Freycinet National Park

Freycinet National Park

Freycinet National Park is Tasmania’s oldest national park. It was established in 1916. It includes the well-known, scenic Wineglass Bay-famous throughout Australia and beyond-and the Hazard mountain range. Wineglass Bay is extremely popular, and it’s no surprise: unique landscapes and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world attract thousands of tourists. Several hiking trails run through the park.

Recommended excursions

Hobart Sightseeing Tour

Hobart Sightseeing Tour

The excursion begins at the site where the city was founded-the Sullivan Bay. Today, it is a picturesque port with yachts and fishing vessels-an favorite vacation spot for tourists. You will see the Tasmanian Parliament building, take a stroll along the famous Salamanca Place located on Hobart’s waterfront, and walk down the Kelly Steps. Next, you will head to the historic part of the city, Battery Point, with elegant old cottages, see the oldest brewery in Australia, visit the ruins of the Women’s Factory-formerly a women’s prison-stop by the Watchtower, enjoy a wonderful walk through the Royal Botanic Garden, and cross the Derwent River via the Tasman Bridge that connects the two parts of the city.

Richmond, Meet the Tasmanian Devil

Richmond, Meet the Tasmanian Devil

Historic Richmond is one of Tasmania’s most visited places, a beautifully preserved example of convict heritage with elegant stone cottages and charming houses in classic Georgian style. You will cross Australia’s oldest stone bridge, built by convicts, visit the first Catholic church in Australia that is still operating today, and tour the cell of the oldest prison in Australia. Then you will head to the most popular wildlife park (Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary), where you can watch the thrilling process of feeding the dangerously growling ferocious Tasmanian devils, learn a lot of interesting facts about this predator, and have the chance to get up close and interact with Tasmania’s symbols-platypus and echidna. You can also take photos with a sleepy koala and a cute wombat, and feed from your hand alongside kangaroos and wallabies as they roam around nearby.
