Half Moon Cay is an amazing natural attraction off the coast of Belize. This is the name of a coral island surrounded by a ridge of coral reef called Lighthouse Reef. In 1996, Half Moon Cay was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Belize Barrier Reef.
The island’s nature is truly pure and untouched. There are no cities, villages, hotels, noisy markets, or shops here. A calm, relaxing atmosphere reigns-there isn’t even a hint of bustle: only rest and enjoyment of the natural scenery. Island landscapes are a ready-made picture for advertising brochures: the cleanest water, the purest sand, and a kaleidoscope of colorful fish in the coastal waters.
By the way, the island is privately owned by the cruise company Holland America Line. Visitors feel like they’re part of an exclusive closed club-you can’t just get here. But if you’re lucky enough to have such a truly unique opportunity, you’ll enjoy it to the fullest. This is especially true for lovers of diving and deep-sea fishing. Even if you only have a simple mask with a snorkel, the underwater world will amaze you with vivid colors and incredible diversity of its inhabitants.
Half Moon Cay will be of interest primarily to divers and fans of eco-tourism. After all, the Belize Barrier Reef is among the five most beautiful reefs on the planet, and the island’s nature is practically unique. On this small island, you can find up to 120 different bird species! The most unusual of them are the red-footed booby and the magnificent frigate-a large bird with a wingspan of up to two meters, capable of soaring in the air for hours and performing acrobatic maneuvers.
But even if you’re not into swimming underwater and don’t enjoy taking walks, you’ll feel like the happiest person in the world on the island. Fine white sand and exquisite crystal-clear water will provide a wonderful vacation for both adults and children.
ClimateThe climate here is tropical and trade-wind driven, with heavy rainfall in May-June and September-October. The average temperature in January is 21 °C, in July it’s about 30 °C. From June to October, hurricanes are possible.
