Freeport, Bahamas
Description — Freeport, Bahamas
Freeport is a city and free-trade zone on Grand Bahama Island (the Bahamas), located approximately 160 km (100 miles) east-northeast of Fort Lauderdale (South Florida).
In these parts, in the 1700s, pirates repeatedly set up stops for their ships. In coastal areas, spontaneous markets often sprang up, where enterprising traders bought slaves and stolen goods for cheap. After piracy was eliminated, the islands fell into decline. In 1955, the Bahamian government granted Wallace Groves, a Virginia financier engaged in the timber-processing industry on the island, 200 km² (50,000 acres) of swamps and wasteland. On this land, the city of Freeport was built, which became the Bahamas’ second most populous city after the capital, Nassau. Freeport itself has a population of 26,910 (2010).
Tourism, along with trade, is a source of income for the city’s budget, attracting over one million tourists every year. It is a favorite destination for active travelers-everything is at the highest level here: huge golf courses, spots for underwater fishing, diving centers, tennis courts, and all of this is in harmony with picturesque nature. The city is surrounded by extensive Cuban pine forests, while azure-green lagoons wash over it-abundant wildlife surrounds you everywhere.
ClimateFreeport’s climate is tropical. Winter is mild and dry, with temperatures rarely dropping below +16 °C. Summer, by contrast, is hot and humid. Air temperatures in summer reach +32 °C, and the water warms up to +25…+28 °C. Despite the fact that there has never been a frost in Freeport, in January 1977 wet snow was observed here, and the temperature fell to +4.5 °C. In 2004, Hurricane struck Freeport twice.

What to see
Beaches
There are a huge number of wonderful white-sand beaches near Freeport. The most popular of them are in Lucaya, although you can’t find seclusion there. The farther you drive from the city, the fewer tourists you’ll encounter. We recommend relaxing at Coral Beach, Williams Town, Xanadu, Taino, Burberry, the Plane Crash beach (Plain crash), and Gold Rock. In fact, the entire south coast of Grand Bahama Island is a continuous line of beaches. On the beaches you can find a variety of water activities. This is a great place for snorkeling or diving. And those who love to enjoy the underwater world without getting in the water can take a glass-bottom boat tour.
International Market
This is one of the two main shopping areas in Freeport (the second is located in the Lucaya port area near the large Lucayan Beach). On a gigantic square of 40 thousand square meters, more than a hundred large and small shops, stalls, and boutiques are arranged, divided into sectors according to a geographical principle: in each sector, products from a specific part of the world are available. That’s why you can find absolutely everything here: from inexpensive handmade African talismans to genuine Swiss watches for thousands of euros. Naturally, all of it is several times cheaper than in Europe and the USA, since Freeport is a duty-free shopping zone.
Wallace Groves Gardens
In this indescribably romantic and beautiful place, thousands of tree, flower, and shrub species grow, hundreds of birds cry out, vast bright clouds of butterflies fill the air, and dozens of animal species run, jump, and crawl-ranging from crocodiles to iguanas. A huge park covering 50,000 sq.m was opened in 1973 and dedicated to the founders of Freeport, the Wallace Groves spouses. You can travel through the garden with a guide, or explore it at your own leisurely and thorough pace. In addition to lush greenery and the sounds of nature, you’ll see an ancient chapel, sparkling waterfalls spraying with water, and the mysterious Grand Bahama Labyrinth, which copies the famous Labyrinth of Chartres in the medieval Notre-Dame de Chartres cathedral in France. Lunch can be enjoyed at a café-bar with a terrace offering a delightful view of the ponds and waterfalls. For little visitors, there is a playground.
Peterson Kay National Park
This tiny island cove off the south coast of Grand Bahama is at once a small national park-home to one of the most beautiful reefs in the Bahamas. Thanks to the corals, iridescent tropical fish, and lush green seaweed, the water around the island looks like a riot of colors. Here you can spot parrotfish and barracuda, a sea devil and a sea fan, as well as dangerous stingrays and spiny sea urchins. At the northern tip of the island is a wonderful white-sand beach, where you’re welcome to sunbathe and set up picnics. The island reserve is protected by the government, so the administration kindly asks all visitors to “take only photos with you and leave only footprints in the sand behind.”
Lukaya Resort Port
Lucaya Port is one of the centers of an active resort lifestyle in the Bahamas. It has long been popular as the country’s most fun and lively area. Here you’ll find several large casinos, huge markets, and excellent hotels. The port is surrounded by charming restaurants with great cuisine, colorful and characterful bars and taverns. Everything here is geared toward creating and maintaining a comfortable, pleasant atmosphere for your vacation. The scenery is beautiful too-one bay gives way to another along the coast. And the beach in Lucaya is among the best in the Bahamas. Among the most interesting and popular entertainments are sailing excursions to the open sea or by boat, swimming with dolphins, diving, and much more.
Rand Living Nature Centre
In the very heart of loud and bustling Freeport, there is a completely different world-a calm place that lives by its own rhythms, yet no less rich in sounds. But these sounds belong to nature itself. In the Rand Reserve, which occupies as much as 400 square kilometers of the city’s territory, pine forests rustle, various little animals live here, and migratory birds take turns-watch them on an organized excursion on the first Sunday of every month. The peak of the birds’ activity runs from October to May. The excursion is even called-“Bird Walk”. And there is also the world’s largest coral reef, created by human hands, along with a real underwater observatory. The center was founded in 1968 by the wife of American inventor James Rand, Dorothy-in memory of her husband and with the aim of preserving the magnificent Bahamian nature.
Recommended excursions
Guided Sightseeing Tour of Freeport
This is quite a long excursion that takes you to all the city’s memorable landmarks. You will visit Lucayan Park and get to know the Gold Rock Beach as well as the famous caves. Stop by the Lucaya Port, where life is always bustling, and the entertainment programs created for tourists will impress even the most avid travelers. Tourists will also visit the famous Wallace Groves Garden, the founder of the city, who created a true paradise-like tropical place throughout the area, the only city market, the Lucaya Market, and stroll through shops and souvenir stores.
Fragrance of the Bahamas Perfume Factory
Renowned fragrant production is located in an elegant old-style mansion in the eastern part of the International Market in Freeport. You can visit the factory on a completely free excursion, see all the stages of creating the fragrant little bubbles and bottles (most operations are performed manually), and learn the secrets of the signature Fragrance of the Bahamas packaging: for example, each Sand Cologne bottle contains a pinch of white sand from a real Bahamian beach, and each Pink Pearl bottle holds a small pearl. The main adventure at the factory is the chance to create your own fragrance by mixing all the ingredients you like, pour the perfume into an exquisite clear vial, and give it a name you’ve personally come up with. Naturally, the result of your experiment will be presented to you with the best wishes.
