Cruises to Northern Europe

Description — Eidfjord, Norway

Eidfjord is a cozy resort town located on the shore of Norway’s largest and most picturesque fjord-Hardangerfjord. It is situated right in the middle of the southern part of central Norway. The population is quite modest (by our standards), with just 1000 residents across an area of 1500 sq km.

Tourism in the modern sense is only just starting to develop here, although people have been visiting these places since 1820. These were rare visits by wealthy European aristocrats, who came to admire the waterfalls and the rare beauty of the natural scenery. Fishing has always been-and still is-especially appealing here. Back then, in 1820, one English lord even bought a license to organize fishing on the Yeo River.

The area around the city is known for its museums, which are located around the fjord. There is a charming Ingebrigt Vik Museum-the famed sculptor of Norway-or the Hardanger Painting Museum, where artworks by contemporary artists are displayed.

Climate

In this region, a moderately maritime climate prevails, with sharp temperature swings practically absent. Winters here are mild and not frosty (-1...+3 °C), while summers are warm enough (+12...+18 °C). It’s worth noting that these places are quite rainy (300 days a year); however, local rains are short-lived and warm enough.

Nature Center of the Hardanger Region

Nature Center of the Hardanger Region

In the village there is the Hardanger Region Nature Centre. A superbly organized exhibition, as well as a panoramic cinema, are a great way to spend your leisure time both usefully and enjoyably. This is a place where families come. Even young children are interested in the live exhibitions held there. Hardly anywhere else will you hear such captivating lectures on geology, botany, glaciology, zoology, ornithology, and archaeology. And this is not a dull text, but a story told using the latest technologies. The Hardanger Nature Centre is one of the leading organizations of its kind. The Centre has three floors, which house a diorama pavilion, interactive screens, and an aquarium.

What to see

Hardangerfjord

Hardangerfjord

Hardangerfjord is located on the west coast of Norway, in the heart of the fjord region. It is 179 km long and has a maximum depth of 800 m. Hardangerfjord is called the “Garden of Norway.” Here, at the latitude of St. Petersburg, numerous fruit trees grow. In May, the orchards bloom and the shores are covered with white caps, so it’s recommended to visit in spring-for the flowering-or in summer-to pick the harvest of apples, pears, plums, cherries, and sour cherries. From here, the fruit is delivered throughout the country and exported to Scandinavian countries. The fjord is surrounded by rocky mountains up to 1.5 km high, from which many magnificent waterfalls cascade down.

Waterfall Vøringsfossen

Waterfall Vøringsfossen

One of the most visited and famous waterfalls is Vøringsfossen. The waterfall is incredibly beautiful. In Norway, it ranks fourth in height. The waterfall is 183 meters high, 145 meters of which is free fall. Vøringsfossen is also called the Rainbow Waterfall. That’s because a rainbow appears here very often. On the approach to the waterfall, there is a viewing platform. From there, you can enjoy a beautiful view of how, along the edge of the cliff, a white, foam-like stream of water rushes down. Near the viewing platform there is a parking lot. On the way to the viewing platform, you may come across berry bushes; everywhere, cloudberries and lingonberries grow.

Mobëgaldane Trail

Mobëgaldane Trail

A scenic hiking trail through the gorge consists of 1500 steps and 125 turns. But it is precisely this old winding road through Möbögalden, built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, that allows tourists to take in all the beauty of the Vøringfossen waterfall.

Recommended excursions

Panorama Hardangervidda

Panorama Hardangervidda

Hardangervidda is the highest mountain plateau in Europe, rising to an altitude of 1100-1400 meters above sea level. The Hardangerjøkulen glacier is located here-the fifth largest in Norway-and the national park. Many rivers originate in mountain lakes; the most famous are Numedalslågen and Telemarksvassdraget in the east, and Bjorøya with the Vøringsfossen waterfall in the west. Ancient mountain passes and well-trodden trails indicate that people traveled these mountains in the past. Hunters tracked reindeer, and fishermen still come here to catch trout. Today, however, most visitors to Hardangervidda are enthusiasts of mountain hiking. In the west of the plateau, near Sørfjord, there is a very unusual rock formation-the “Troll’s Tongue”-rising above Lake Ringedalsvatnet.
