Dover (Dover) - a port city located in the east of the English coast, belonging to the county of Kent. A distinctive feature is that Dover is situated on the seashore in the narrowest part of the English Channel, namely the Strait of Dover (Pas-de-Calais). Since April 1, 1974, Dover has been the main administrative center of the district (the so-called Dover District). Undoubtedly, this is an extraordinary and picturesque place for rest and travel.
Dover was built on the River Dour at its mouth, in a valley surrounded by world-famous unique white cliffs. They are often seen by travelers crossing the Strait of Dover (Pas-de-Calais). The distance between the two shores of the Strait of Dover in its narrowest part-namely between South Foreland and Grey Nose Point (or in the original - Cap Gris Nez)-is only 34 kilometers.
The Port of Dover is a major passenger and freight port throughout Europe. Much of the port’s territory has been reclaimed from the sea. The harbor is divided into Eastern and Western piers; they are located one kilometer apart. The eastern part of the harbor provides ferry services to Dunkirk, Calais, Boulogne; in addition, a cargo terminal is located there as well. The western part includes a railway station, ship and ferry berths. Today, an active terminal for regular tourist and cruise ships operates in the western part of the harbor. In Dover, there are two railway stations. Active service connects Dover with cities such as London, Canterbury, Ramsgate, and others. Two newspapers operate in Dover-the "Dover Mercury" and the "Dover Express".
ClimateThe climate is mild; in winter, in January, temperatures are stable and very rarely fall below +1°С. In summer, in July, it is 16–20°С, and very infrequently above +21°С. The average annual precipitation is 703.6 mm; its distribution across seasons is uneven. The maximum rainfall usually occurs in autumn-October and November. The average temperature over the year ranges within 11° C, and the average annual precipitation is about 760 mm (the maximum rainy weather is in October). The coldest month is January (temperatures stay between +3° С and +7° С), and the warmest month of the year is July (temperatures stay between +11°C and +17°C).
The most suitable time for a trip is considered the period from April to September. It is precisely during this time that stable weather is expected. July and August are the peak season for tourist travel-about one and a half million tourists arrive and depart for and from the UK-and if there is an opportunity, it is still better not to plan a trip during this period.
