Dover (Dover) - a port city located on the east coast of England, belonging to the county of Kent. A distinctive feature is that Dover lies on the seashore at the narrowest point of the English Channel, namely in the Strait of Dover (Pas-de-Calais). Since April 1, 1974 Dover has been the main administrative center of the district (the so-called Dover District). Undoubtedly, this is an extraordinary and picturesque place for relaxation and travel.
Dover was built on the River Dour at its mouth, in a valley surrounded by world-famous unique white cliffs. These cliffs are often seen by travelers crossing the English Channel. The distance between the two shores of the English Channel at its narrowest point-namely between South Foreland and Gris-Nez Point- is only 34 kilometers.
The Port of Dover is a major passenger and cargo port in all of Europe. Much of the port’s territory has been reclaimed from the sea. The harbor is divided into Eastern and Western piers; they are located one kilometer apart. The eastern part of the harbor provides ferry services to Dunkirk, Calais, and Boulogne; in addition, there is a cargo terminal there. The western part includes a railway station, piers for ships and ferries. Today, in the western part of the harbor, a terminal for regular tourist and cruise vessels operates actively. There are two railway stations in Dover. Active service connects Dover with cities such as London, Canterbury, Ramsgate, and others. Two newspapers are published in Dover - “Dover Mercury” and “Dover Express”.
ClimateThe climate is mild: in winter, in January, temperatures are steady and very rarely drop below +1°C; in summer, in July it is 16-20°C and very rarely above +21°C. The average annual precipitation is 703.6 mm; its distribution across seasons is uneven, with the maximum precipitation usually occurring in autumn-October, November. The average temperature throughout the year ranges from 11°C; the average annual precipitation is about 760 mm (the maximum rainy weather is in October). The coldest month is January (temperatures stay between +3°C and +7°C); the warmest month of the year is July (temperatures stay between +11°C and +17°C).
The most suitable time for a trip is considered to be from April to September. That’s exactly when the weather is stable. July and August are the peak of tourist travel; during this period, about one and a half million tourists arrive in and fly to the United Kingdom, and if possible, it’s still better not to plan a trip during this time.
