Description — Daska Sound, New Zealand
Dusky Sound - a fjord in the south-western part of New Zealand’s South Island, within the boundaries of Fiordland National Park. Dusky Sound is not only one of the fjords with the most challenging terrain in the country’s south-west, but it is also considered the largest in New Zealand: it stretches for up to 40 km, with a maximum width of 8 km.
To the north of the point where it meets the sea, there is a large island, Resolution Island, which in the north-western section blocks the fjord off from the Tasman Sea. Several large islands lie within the fjord, among which Anchor, Long Island, and Cooper stand out. In the upper reaches of Dusky Sound, the fjord’s shores are rocky, and due to the high amount of rainfall in the region, there are many waterfalls here that drop from great heights into the fjord during the rainy season.
Seals and dolphins are commonly seen in Dusky Sound, and occasionally whales enter the area. Several small rivers flow into the fjord, the largest of which is the Seaforth River.
The fjord was first explored by a European discoverer: the British traveler James Cook, who opened it during his first journey to New Zealand in 1770. The traveler considered the bay a very convenient harbor for ships heading from Europe to the Pacific Ocean. Later, throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Dusky Sound was used more than once by other European sailors and traders as a harbor.
ClimateThe climate here is cool and temperate. The precipitation level ranges from 600 to 1600 millimeters per year. It is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, except for a drier summer period. The average annual temperature is between +10 °C. The coldest month is July, and the warmest months are January and February.
