Description — Bridgetown, Barbados

Bridgetown is the capital of the independent island country of Barbados, which is part of the British Commonwealth. It is located in the southern part of the country’s west coast, in the parish of Saint Michael. The city stands on the shore of Carlisle Bay along the delta of the Constitution River. Literally, the capital’s name translates as “bridge town,” which is explained by its location on the shore of a narrow sea bay that cuts the center of the city in two. Since ancient times, two bridges have been built across the bay-Chamberlain Bridge and Charles O'neal Bridge-leading to the city’s two main markets: Fairchild Market and Cheapside Market.

Bridgetown is a small town with a population of just 80,000 people, featuring a colorful settlement built with houses in a style that resembles a blend of colonial and modern trends, with narrow lanes, rum shops, and cozy cafés.

The city was founded in the first half of the 17th century and for a long time served as a center of the slave trade in the West Indies. Only in 1966 did the city gain the status of the capital of the independent state of Barbados. Bridgetown’s economy began to develop quite rapidly after the construction in 1961 of an artificial harbor accessible to ships with deep drafts. Thanks to this, the city turned into the country’s main port. By 1970, tourism took the lead in the capital’s economy, pushing aside the processing of sugarcane.

Bridgetown’s popularity was driven by luxurious duty-free shopping, regular visits by cruise ships, and historical landmarks that turned the city into a small tropical copy of London. It is in the capital of Barbados that the country’s most interesting architectural attractions are located.

Bridgetown is a paradise for shopping lovers. The city is known for its many duty-free shops. In addition to Broad Street, the main shopping thoroughfares of Bridgetown are Swann Street, Roebuck Street, and Tudor Street.

Climate

The city’s climate is among the best across the entire West Indies. The average air temperature is considered to be +27 ºC. Between June and October, about 75% of the annual precipitation falls. The wettest month of the year is July. It is at this time that the highest likelihood of passing typhoons and hurricane-force winds occurs, although Barbados is not in the hurricane zone and lies right on its edge. The optimal time to visit the capital is from February to May.

Historic Repair Dock Carinidzh

Historic Repair Dock Carinidzh

The historic Careenage dry dock was the first port in Barbados for ships making transatlantic crossings, on their way from Africa. Translated from English, Careenage means heeling - a ship tilting without the keel leaving the water, used for cleaning the underwater hull of barnacles and for minor repairs to the ship’s plating. With no access to dry docks, sailors often resorted to this practice, which was carried out in secluded coves. Today, the Careenage is not only a port, but a huge leisure complex for enjoyable downtime, featuring restaurants, bars, shops, and boutiques. And a stroll along the waterfront will take you back in time - charming historic buildings have been preserved here.

What to see

Nidham’s Point Beaches

Nidham’s Point Beaches

Under the general name of Needham’s Point, three beaches are known at once on the south-west coast of Barbados: Needham’s Point itself, Drill Hall, and Pebbles. This is a place that both locals and guests of the island like-and even the most true-to-the-profession hospitality professionals, no less: after all, a Barbados hotel, Hilton, was built here. On this side of the island, the water is usually calm, and the sand is coarse-so the sea is clean and clear, turquoise-blue. There’s nothing for surfers to do along this coast (unless at Drill Hall you can catch a small wave), but for a relaxed beach holiday, Needham’s Point is practically ideal. Needham’s Point has a distinctive atmosphere-nearby there is the 18th-century Fort St. Anne. Its cannons are still aimed at the sea.

Flower Forest Botanical Garden

Flower Forest Botanical Garden

The Flower Forest Botanical Garden covers an area of 20 hectares. It is located 20 km from Barbados, near the town of Saint Joseph. The flower garden is notable not only for the abundance of plants found on its grounds, but also for its masterful layout-strolling through it is a real pleasure. The park has benches and gazebos, and during walks through the lovely glasshouses and spacious avenues, guests will be told plenty of interesting stories about local flora species, since Barbados is home to many unique plants. Huge begonias, royal palms, plane trees, agaves, and cacti-an amazing and complete variety of the plant world. This is a wonderful place to enjoy fresh air and beautiful nature.

Malibu Rum Factory

Malibu Rum Factory

If traditional rum has been made in Barbados for three centuries, then “Malibu” is a liqueur that has only been produced on the island for just three decades. However, the popularity of this drink is high, and it is known all over the world. At the factory, they show how the distillation process works and offer a variety of cocktails to taste. A beneficial distinguishing feature of the factory that makes the fragrant coconut rum “Malibu” is that it is located right on the seafront, and you can enjoy your cocktail properly-on a sun lounger on a sunny beach.

Beaches around Bridgetown

Beaches around Bridgetown

In the outskirts of Bridgetown, there are such popular beach areas as Brandon’s, Bottoms Rock and Fitts Village. The sea here is calm, as along the entire west coast, and the beaches are made of white coral sand and surrounded by palm groves. All beaches in Barbados are municipal, meaning they are open to tourists. The beach areas are equipped with changing rooms, showers, picnic areas and children’s playgrounds. Bridgetown is surrounded by coral reefs. They are ideal for diving and snorkeling. Coral reefs are located both in close proximity to the shore and at a distance of up to 3 km from it. Here you can find the most diverse tropical fish and larger marine inhabitants - barracudas, loggerhead turtles and others.

Mount Gay Rum Factory

Mount Gay Rum Factory

Mount Gay Rum Distillery is a factory producing one of the oldest existing rum brands in the world. It is located in the northern part of Bridgetown, not far from the coast. The distillery has been producing its products since 1703; rum under the Mount Gay brand is sold in 110 countries around the world. The founder is Sir John Gay. Thanks to sailors and pirates, the product became known worldwide and the distillery is now a sponsor of many sailing regattas. It is quite noteworthy that one of the drinks that James Bond ordered in the film "Casino Royale" is Mount Gay Rum with soda. The distillery offers guided tours with tastings, and there is also a great shop with souvenirs and the factory’s products.
