Description — Boston, USA

Boston is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Boston is also one of the oldest and wealthiest cities in the United States. According to the 2012 census, the population of the city itself, the twentieth most populous in the country, is about 636 thousand. The population of the Greater Boston metropolitan area exceeds 5.8 million. Boston and its suburbs are among the ten largest cities in the United States and among the fifty largest cities in the world.

The city was founded by Puritan settlers on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 and named after the English city of Boston in the county of Lincolnshire-the birthplace of the first governor of Massachusetts, John Winthrop.

Boston is a fairly compact city, with a total area of 232.1 sq. km. Most of its territory lies 5–7 m above sea level, while the highest point, Bellevue Hill, is located at an elevation of 101 m. The city is situated on the shore of Boston Bay in Massachusetts.

Boston is truly an amazing city, where historical structures and modern architecture blend beautifully, wide main roads and narrow side streets, old traditions and the modern pace of life. Moreover, it resembles not a bustling American megalopolis, but a refined European city that simply captivates with its special beauty and unique atmosphere.

The cradle of the American Revolution and modern democracy, for two hundred years the former center of the social elite, in the early 20th century Boston gave up its fame to New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Only in the last few decades has the city regained its former political, economic, and cultural influence, returning the title of “the center of the universe”.

Climate

Boston is in the zone of a continental climate, as prevailing western winds reduce the influence of the ocean. Summer is typically warm and humid, while winters are cold, windy, and snowy. The hottest month is July, with an average daytime temperature of +28 °C. The coldest month is January, with an average nighttime temperature of −6 °C. Annual precipitation amounts to 1000–1100 mm. The most precipitation falls from December to March. In spring and the early summer months, fog is common.

Church of the Trinity

Church of the Trinity

Trinity Church in Boston, which was built in 1872-1877, is a masterpiece of American architecture. In 1970, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the United States. Architecture experts unanimously consider Trinity Church one of the best examples of religious architecture in the country. Trinity Church stands at the foot of a skyscraper, whose mirrored walls reflect its luxurious facades. Any construction around the temple is prohibited. The church is especially well protected, as it is one of the first temples created by American architects. To support the enormous mass of the structure, more than 4,000 cedar piles were driven into the base of the church. These piles have not been replaced since the cathedral was founded.

Ship of the United States Constitution

Ship of the United States Constitution

The United States ship “Constitution” (“Old Ironsides”) is a three-masted heavy frigate of the U.S. Navy, the oldest sailing ship in the world that is still afloat. The ship was built in 1797. The first President of the United States, George Washington, named it after the U.S. Constitution. Today, it is docked at the Boston Navy Yard. The transport facility is open to visitors all year round, with free guided tours provided. The crew, made up of 6 officers and 46 crew members, takes part in ceremonies, educational programs, and special events. Once a year, “Constitution” makes a cruise during which, while being towed, the ship heads to the Boston Harbor.

Old Capitol

Old Capitol

Old State House - a historic building-museum, considered the oldest public building in the city. The structure was built in 1713 in the Georgian style. In 1881, the “Boston Society” was formed with the aim of preserving the site. To this day, the organization owns the Old State House. In the museum, you will see a multimedia presentation about the Boston Massacre (an street clash that took place on March 5, 1770, between local residents and British soldiers), and you can take part in a guided tour. The Old State House is the 10th stop out of 16 on the Freedom Trail. In 1966, the building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and since 1990 it has been a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

Fort of Independence

Fort of Independence

Fort Independence is the eighth fortification structure built on this site throughout the entire history of the fortifications here. The history of the fort dates back to 1634, when the first fortress was built. This happened 15 years after the first settlers arrived in the area. Having significant strategic importance, the fort was repeatedly destroyed and then rebuilt again. Today, it is a pleasant place for a full-fledged vacation. Fresh sea air and beautiful views will leave no one indifferent. The fort is now included in the Register of Historic Places, and free guided tours are held across its grounds. Fort and the historic park surrounding it are a great place for walking, jogging, and a relaxing pastime.

What to see

Freedom Trail

Freedom Trail

Through Boston’s historic center runs the Freedom Trail. This is a sightseeing route that you can’t get lost on, because the Freedom Trail is marked with color-white on red cobblestones and red on gray sidewalk slabs. It begins near Boston Common Park and takes you past 16 of the city’s attractions. You will walk by the King’s Chapel, visit the cemetery where famous natives of New England are buried, see the oldest bookstore in Boston, and the place where the city’s first school was located. The Freedom Trail goes through the site of the Boston Massacre-a legendary street clash between townspeople and British soldiers. The final stop on the route is the sailing ship “Constitution” in the Charlestown harbor.

Boston Common

Boston Common

Boston Common is Boston's main park. Although it covers less area than the famous New York Central Park, it surpasses it in age-Boston Common is the oldest city park in the United States. In winter, an ice rink operates at Boston Common, while in summer concerts and outdoor music festivals are held. The park is worth visiting at least to see the first subway stations in the United States-the line connecting Park Street Station and Boylston Station began operating in 1897. Another attraction of the park is a bronze fountain, which is nearly seven meters high. Boston Common also includes Boston City Hall Park-an enchanting place with lots of interesting sculptures and a beautiful pond with swans.

The Old Neighborhoods of Beacon Hill and North End

The Old Neighborhoods of Beacon Hill and North End

North End, or the Northern Fringe, is a small neighborhood that today somewhat resembles a small Italian town. Italian is heard in the streets, and there are cozy little cafés everywhere. In the past, wealthy American families lived here before moving to the new Beacon Hill district; in North End, new immigrants began to settle-Italians, Irish, and Jews. The new Beacon Hill neighborhood was designed after the revolution by Charles Bulfinch and his fellow architect colleagues. Over time, Beacon Hill grew with narrow lanes paved with cobblestones, luxurious mansions with picturesque inner courtyards, and flowerbeds on the roofs. In December 1962, the Beacon Hill district was recognized as a national historical landmark.

New England Aquarium

New England Aquarium

More than 600 species of marine animals (20 thousand specimens) live in the New England Aquarium, located on Boston’s waterfront. Visitors can explore the underwater world of Pacific reefs and Arctic ice floes, watch penguins being fed, see sea lions, and discover exotic jellyfish in all colors and aquatic turtles of all sizes. At the center of the oceanarium is a huge water tank. By walking around it along a four-tier spiral walkway, you can view real sharks from every side. The aquarium has a snack bar, a souvenir shop, and an IMAX cinema with a giant screen, where films about the underwater world are shown.

Franklin Zoo

Franklin Zoo

In 2012, Franklin Park Zoo is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Like any American zoo, it is divided into themed zones where animal species that can coexist live peacefully together. In this case, most of them are African animals: inhabitants of the tropical forest, Masai giraffes, rare desert zebras, ostriches, and wild members of the dog family. The main lion of the Franklin Zoo has been given his own kingdom-like a true king of beasts. Large, colorful pavilions are dedicated to butterflies and birds. You can grab a bite at one of the zoo cafés, but it’s also not forbidden to bring sandwiches with you.

Science Museum

Science Museum

This museum is designed for those who want to learn more about scientific and technological progress, the evolution of modern technology, see the working models of various instruments, and so on. The museum focuses on hands-on experience, experimentation, and practice-its creators are confident that a three-dimensional “movie shark” will be remembered better than a flat one, and that a moving device is better than a stationary mechanism behind glass. The Science Museum has a good planetarium and a 3D cinema. One visit is definitely not enough: exhibitions are constantly changing here, including those devoted to space exploration, research on birds and animals on Earth, the history of technology, and the latest advances in medicine.

Recommended excursions

Boston City Sightseeing Tour

Boston City Sightseeing Tour

Boston is not only one of the oldest and most celebrated cities, but also one of the most beautiful cities in America. Visiting it is of both educational interest and provides aesthetic pleasure. You will visit Boston’s satellite city, Cambridge, where the renowned American university Harvard is located. Then, crossing the beautiful Cambridge Bridge, you will enter Boston, where you will see the main architectural landmarks - the Christian Science Center, a giant glass globe displaying the 1933 world map, Trinity Church, and the Public Library. Next, you will pass through the residential neighborhoods of Beacon Hill, reminiscent of aristocratic quarters in England’s capital, see the famous King’s Chapel, and admire the charming “château”-style old Boston City Hall building with a bronze donkey in the courtyard. To round off the tour, you will explore the winding streets of Downtown and Quincy Market.

Whale watching

Whale watching

From Boston Harbor you can set off on a three-hour trip with a romantic purpose - to watch living whales. This activity is available for almost the entire year, except the coldest winter months. The catamaran boat departs from the pier several times a day, but it’s a good idea to arrange tickets in advance. The schedule depends on the season. The entire trip is accompanied by a guide’s commentary. The risk of not seeing whales and dolphins is practically nonexistent - the crew knows where to sail to spot the whales. As a rule, you can observe several marine mammals in close proximity from both the right and the left sides of the ship.
