Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, with a population of about 1.3 million people, which accounts for around 32% of the country’s total population. The area covered by Greater Auckland is the largest urban region in New Zealand. In 2011, Auckland ranked third in the international consulting firm Mercer’s published list of the most liveable cities.
The city is located on the North Island of New Zealand on a vast plateau. It is surrounded by two mountain ranges, three sea bays, and within its boundaries there are 48 extinct volcanoes and more than 50 islands. Auckland’s territory lies between the Hauraki Gulf on the Pacific Ocean side to the east, the low Hānua[i] ranges in the south-east, the Manukau Harbour in the south-west, and the Waitākere Ranges in the west and north-west.
The Māori began settling in these areas virtually soon after their arrival in New Zealand around 800 years ago. Convenient bays and fertile lands made this region extremely attractive. Fortified settlements were built on practically all the volcanoes and elevated areas. The ceremony for laying the first stone of the European settlement took place on 1 September 1840. The main flow of emigrants to New Zealand passed through Auckland.
Auckland is called the City of Sails-an enchanting panorama of countless fleets of yachts and sailing ships is traditionally the city’s calling card. An abundance of gardens and parks, beaches and places for outdoor recreation, lively streets with trendy boutiques and restaurants, sports clubs and entertainment centers for every taste-all of this makes Auckland truly a wonderful place to vacation. Fully deserving its title as New Zealand’s cultural capital, the city is without equal anywhere else in Oceania (except for Australia): in a single city there is such a concentration of museums, botanical gardens, and parks, including those located on the many islands in the Hauraki Gulf.
Climate
Auckland is situated in a temperate oceanic climate zone, characterized by warm, humid summers and cool, rainy winters. It is the warmest major settlement in New Zealand, and over the past three years Auckland has also been the sunniest city in the country.
The average maximum daytime temperature in February and July is 23.7 °C and 14.5 °C, respectively.
Rain falls in Auckland all year round, and the average annual precipitation reaches 1240 mm, spread across approximately 137 rainy days. Weather conditions vary somewhat across different parts of the city, determined above all by the proximity of the mountains and the ocean. Snow is an extremely rare occurrence in Auckland. A distinctive feature of the city’s climate, as in almost all of New Zealand, is high air humidity. Due to the high humidity, temperature fluctuations are felt particularly intensely.

Sky Tower Tower
The tallest structure in New Zealand is both a place with breathtaking views and one of the country’s most extreme attractions. On clear days, from the Sky Tower observation decks (there are at least two-the highest one at a height of 220 meters), you can see the surrounding area within a radius of 80 km. The tower has a restaurant and a café. The two main attractions at Sky Tower are SkyWalk, a walk along an open parapet around the entire tower, and SkyJump, a jump downward with a tethered cable. Both attractions are not for the faint-hearted and not for those who are afraid of heights.
What to see
The Underwater World of Kelly Tarlton
An amazing underground museum-aquarium with caves, tunnels and underwater reefs. Sharks, rays, piranhas, octopuses and hundreds of other marine inhabitants live here. And you can move around the museum either on a flat escalator belt or in tiny little carriages. The “Arctic section” is especially popular in the “Underwater World” - an icy town built for royal penguins. Don’t miss the local café, with a giant window built right into the aquarium.
Weytaker Rangers
On 16,000 hectares of the reserve, there are rainforests, beaches, dramatic cliffs, streams and waterfalls. Here you can go fishing by taking a boat into Manukau Harbour, ride horses, swim (safe beaches with no strong waves are located nearby, near Cornwallis and Haiya) and enjoy endless walks along forest trails. Several dozen species of ferns grow in the park, along with giant coniferous kauri trees; green geckos, fun colorful fantails, forest frogs and many other animals live here. The reserve’s main attractions are its waterfalls (some are at Lake Waianamu) and the cliffs on the west coast, formed several million years ago after a volcanic eruption.
Devonport
One of Auckland’s oldest suburbs, founded in 1840, offers charming beaches, cozy piers, and plenty of other maritime-themed sights. You can get there either by bridge or, what’s much more pleasant - by ferry (12-15 minutes). In Devonport itself, head to Victoria Road, where you’ll find plenty of restaurants and cafés. There are also a dozen or so travel agencies here offering trips to any of the three local extinct volcanoes.
Waiheke Island
From the perspective of the perfect getaway, Waiheke Island is the most beloved by tourists. Picturesque rocky and pebbly shores alternate here with classic sandy beaches, as if pulled from the covers of travel magazines. Quiet, secluded coves sit side by side with spacious, lively areas where music is always playing, and the beach season never really ends. Even the ocean behaves differently along Waiheke’s shores-there are waves that are ideal for surfing, as well as calm, smooth waters for diving. Food lovers and connoisseurs of drinks made from grape clusters are drawn in by countless restaurants and cafés. To produce elite wine of the highest quality, Waiheke Island has been blessed by nature with ideal conditions.
Rainbow's End Amusement Park
A children’s amusement park with a bunch of attractions, carousels, and American roller coasters of varying degrees of spookiness. Here you can zip by on a boat through a waterfall, plummet into a chasm from the 18-story “Tower of Fear,” race across a map along a winding track, play golf, and even board a spaceship.

Trip to the Geothermal Valley of Rotorua
In the Rotorua valley, you will visit Agrodome - an agricultural park, watch a sheep shearing show, and see a traditional New Zealand farm. Next, you will take a ride on the cable car and enjoy a walk through Whakarewarewa Termal Reserve - an unusual thermal park and village where residents efficiently use the earth’s energy and heat for everyday needs. Here you will find Pōhutu, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, and in a specially darkened room you can see the flightless kiwi bird - a symbol of the country. In conclusion, the tour will include a visit to the “Maori Institute”, which tells you about the culture of the indigenous people of New Zealand and introduces you to their traditional crafts.
Lord of the Rings tour sites
You can walk through Hobbiton, see Bag End, the Gaitstock inn, and other sets created for the films "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit". You will also see Rangiriri, the site of the famous Maori and British battle in 1863, and continue your walk through a chain of small historic riverside towns.
