Amber Cove is a new cruise port in Maimon Bay, near the city of San Felipe de Puerto Plata. The port was built in 2015. The project is designed to revive the northern coast of the Dominican Republic as a cruise destination. The last time a cruise ship docked off the coast of Puerto Plata Province was 30 years ago.
San Felipe de Puerto Plata is a city and a municipality in the Dominican Republic, the capital of Puerto Plata Province. To the north, it is washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. San Felipe de Puerto Plata is located 215 km from the country’s capital, Santo Domingo.
Founded in 1502, the city of Puerto Plata-translated from Spanish as “silver port”-owes its name to Christopher Columbus, who sailed by and praised the sparkling bay, convenient and sunlit. Over the following long period, the city served as an intermediate supply point for ships crossing the ocean, which made it vulnerable to pirate raids.
In 1863, during the War of Restoration of Dominican Independence, the city was completely destroyed. Starting in 1865, the modern Puerto Plata began to be rebuilt; this explains the dominant Victorian architectural style in the city today.
