Description — Alden, Norway
Olden is a small port in Norway, a small fishing village in the southern part of Nordfjord, the Stryn municipality in the county of Sogn og Fjordane. According to the 2013 census, 498 people live here. Olden is located at the mouth of the Oldelva River in the northern part of the Oldedalen valley. 6 km from Olden there is the charming village of Loen, and 16 km away is the central town of the Stryn municipality.
Olden is a very popular tourist center. Nearby, 25 km away, is one of Norway’s best-known glaciers-Brixdalsbreen Glacier. It is a branch of the Jostedalsbreen Glacier, the largest on the mainland of Europe (487 sq. km). Thousands of tourists come here every year to see this breathtaking place.
The beauty of the surroundings of Olden is truly dramatic-bright green valleys and tidy farmhouses lie surrounded by tall mountains, glittering glaciers, and roaring waterfalls. The main attraction that almost all tourists who come to Olden try to see is the famous Brixdalsbreen Glacier. The drive from the port to the glacier’s tourist center takes about 45 minutes by bus. Here you can go for a walk to the glacier or rent a troll car, a special tourist vehicle. On the way to the glacier you will see beautiful snow-covered mountain peaks, waterfalls, and small glacial lakes. One of the waterfalls that originates from Brixdalsbreen is the beautiful Kleivafossen, which can also be admired from a picturesque bridge.
