Description — Akhtubinsk, Russia

Akhtubinsk is a town in the Astrakhan Oblast of Russia, the administrative center of Akhtubinsky District. It is located on the left banks of the Volga river branches: Akhtuba, Vladimirovka and Kalmynka, 292 km north of Astrakhan. The floodplain is generally characterized by a relief with large ridges, with oxbow lakes.

Tourists call the city the “aviation capital of Russia.” It is home to the State Flight Test Center of the Ministry of Defense named after Chkalov (GLIC). Literally everything in Akhtubinsk is shaped by aviation.

Climate

The town’s arid climate is formed under the influence of circulation atmospheric processes of the southern zone of the temperate latitudes. Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God

The Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is one of the oldest in the Astrakhan Region; the first references to it date back to 1793. After the 1917 Revolution, the church was destroyed. Its restoration began in 2002 and is still ongoing to this day. During the Great Patriotic War, the Church of Michael the Archangel was also destroyed. It was built in 1819 with funds donated by merchants, which is why people in the area called it “the kulak church.” In the middle of the last century, the church was restored.

Memorial Wing of Icarus

Memorial Wing of Icarus

The “Icarus’ Wing” Memorial is one of the main attractions of Akhtubinsk - located on the banks of the Akhtuba River in a small park and dedicated to the memory of deceased test pilots. Akhtubinsk is a city of aviators; it is home to the State Flight Test Center (GLIC), and many of the pilots who worked there died in aviation accidents. The monument is a metallic wing reaching into the space, with four stelae made of black granite on which the names of the deceased are engraved, along with lines from a poem by R. Rozhdestvensky. It is said that from above these stelae resemble a commemorative cross.

Monument: We won!

Monument: We won!

The “We Won” monument is located in the city center on Lenin Square. It was installed in 2010 and is dedicated to the 902nd Berlin Rifle Regiment, which was formed on the territory of Akhtubinsk. It is the only monument in Russia to camels that took part in the Great Patriotic War and made it all the way to Berlin. The monument’s composition is very simple-an exhausted soldier and two camels harnessed to a cannon. In 1945, it was the 902nd Rifle Regiment that was the first to break through to Hitler’s chancellery and opened fire on the Reichstag.

Another aviation monument is located opposite the entrance to the GLITC - the Tu-16 aircraft. This is one of the most well-known bombers by NATO classification. Despite the fact that local residents treat the plane with complete calm, tourists are in a hurry to take a photo of this giant as a keepsake.

Ahtubinsk Museum of History and Local Lore

Ahtubinsk Museum of History and Local Lore

This is a very young museum. It was opened in 1995 in the old part of the city in the mansion of merchant Evtushenko. The building is historic and is in not very good condition, but thanks to the efforts of the staff, it is kept in decent shape. The museum began as a memorial corner for those who perished in the Great Patriotic War. Over time, new exhibitions were added devoted to modern regional wars. The museum’s main focus is on finding information about people who died on the front lines: documents are collected, stories from relatives and loved ones are gathered, and preserved items are kept.
