Cruises from Chernivtsi

Published: 2 min read

Chernivtsi is located in the very southwest of the country, and the nearest border to it is not Polish but Romanian: crossing points near Porubne and Siret handle a significant flow of traffic from here. The cruise, as always, does not start in Ukraine but in Barcelona, Venice, Civitavecchia, Genoa, or Piraeus, where MSC, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Costa, and Celestyal passengers head, so the first goal of the trip becomes the Romanian side of the border. Right past it lies Suceava airport, small but convenient for its proximity: fewer flights depart from there than from major European hubs, but regular connections to Bucharest significantly widen the further choice. It is usually through Bucharest that people from Chernivtsi catch the flight they need to the European port of embarkation, since direct flights from Suceava simply do not exist in every direction. This route is geographically logical for residents of Bukovyna and noticeably shorter in ground distance than the classic path through Poland used by most of central and eastern Ukraine. It is worth comparing exactly the Suceava plus Bucharest combination with the alternative Polish direction by available flights for the needed dates, not just by distance to the border. Whichever option is chosen, it is better to budget connection time in Bucharest or another transit city with a buffer, not right up against it. The route through Romania is detailed in the article "How a Ukrainian can get on a cruise: the road to the port."

Frequently asked questions

Which border is more convenient for people from Chernivtsi to use?

The nearest direction remains the Romanian border near Porubne and Siret, from where it is not far to Suceava airport with further connections through Bucharest.

Are there direct flights from Suceava to European ports?

There are no direct flights in every needed direction from Suceava, so most travelers from Chernivtsi fly on through Bucharest, where the choice of flight connections is much wider.

How much time should I allow for the road from Chernivtsi to the port of embarkation?

At least a day, accounting for the border, a short flight or transfer to Bucharest, and the further flight to Europe from there.

Do I need a visa for transit through Romania?

Requirements depend on citizenship, so check them in advance on the official website of the Romanian embassy or consulate before the departure date.

Is it more advantageous for people from Chernivtsi to travel through Poland, like from other cities?

That is also a possible option, but given the distance the Romanian direction through Suceava and Bucharest is usually more logical geographically for residents of Bukovyna.
